I wish I could have seen this production. I desperately wish they filmed it.

It warms my heart to see how everybody who has worked with Cate have so much regard for her and amazement for her talent as an actress.

Just discovered this fascinating interview with Cate and Liv Ullman. What a treat to hear these two intelligent women talk about Streetcar and how they approached their version of it. I hope Cate performs live again in London, it would be such a privilege to watch her.

I was lucky enough to see Cate as Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire when it was performed at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2009. One of the most powerful performances I have seen on stage.

Cate Blanchett is my favorite actress and Blanche Dubois is one of my favorite fictional characters. Blanche is so often misunderstood as crazy or a joke, I would have loved to see Cate do her justice.

She's certainly not crazy and a joke in Vivien Leigh's hands. She is a TRAGIC lost soul.

I agree. Blanche is such a sympathetic character to me. On some level, being an artist I relate to her, and her dissilusionment with her surroundings. Her soul is that of an artist...and the tension between that and harsh "reality" is palpable...and heartbreaking.

Thank God Woody Allen made the brilliant film Blue Jasmine, where Blanchett basically played an updated Blanche. One of the greatest performances on film.

How interesting that this "STREETCAR" was directed by a woman. What an interesting perspective-- I would have loved to have seen this!! Both Ullmann and Blanchett are so intelligent and articulate; about acting and this play. You can tell how devoted Cate Blanchett is to her craft; not about HERSELF acting, but the character she is playing, and bringing the character's needs and flaws and humanity to the audience.

The perspective is so interesting: Blance is not insane or "mad", but having extreme anxiety.

They seem to go out of their way to NOT mention Vivien Leigh whose performance in the film remains every bit as brilliant as Brando's--if not more. It seems amazing to me that two women artists should be so ignorant of that brilliance. But I get that the point here is to worship Cate.
@jessica54974 жыл бұрын
I think you are being unfair in this comment, was not a Cate workship, the point is that the discussion was not about the original play, but the adaptation, in discussions like this they tended to talk about the original author of the piece -influences and the adaptation-influences, (I've seen too many interviews like this that I ended up decorating lol). Did you watch the play with Cate? I watched it and it was the best Blanche in at least three decades and I didn't see it discussed here like It was...just saw a friend proud of another, so I don't see the "workship" point. Viven was fantastic and everyone knows (or should it) and knows that she was unnecessarily overshadowed by Brando in the reviews but Cate did not imitate her, in fact she almost acted contrary to her ... so ... I still really don't see the point. Some people like to problematize everything on the internet...

@@jessica5497 Vivien Leigh won the Oscar for the role and Brando did not win. He overshadowed Tandy, according to most and he also was etched into iconography due to screaming "Stella" in a torn tee. But people seeing the film do not leave without the strong impressions of Leigh as Blanche. And even though a clip of the film is shown at the beginning of this clip WITH Vivien Leigh in it , neither her name nor performance is mentioned once. Either Blanchett and Ullman did not like Leigh, or they don't want comparisons. It's too bad, because they could have acknowledged her contributions and contrasted them with what their intentions for the role would be. I have heard only an audio of Blanchett acting the role.

The point isn't really to talk about the book or other adaptations. They are there to talk about their play. There are plenty new adaptations of previous movies and plays, and when the people are involved, there's not much of an expectation that they start going into how wonderful the people in the earlier version was. Are there interviews of Vivian Leigh where she talks about Jessica Tandy who played the part in the original Broadway play?
