The wedding “pie” is a Taiwanese wedding tradition that is given to the bride’s family and friends by the groom as a gift. They are distributed by the bride (and her parents and siblings) before the wedding date. The reason for this gift is because traditionally the bride’s side of guests don’t go to the wedding banquet as the bride is viewed to be married into the groom’s family. There is a separate banquet for the bride’s family and friends at a later date as a gesture of appreciation from the groom’s family. The tradition of holding separate wedding banquets is often simplified in the modern society in which the bride’s family and friends are invited to the main wedding banquet. However some couples still follow the traditional wedding practice. These wedding pies come in both savory and sweet fillings, and the outer shell is flaky and sweet. A more popular choice amongst young people these days is the western style cookies.

I have googled the shop and it is in central Taiwan. To my surprise, the price of the traditional cake was extremely cheap but it requires so much hand-made process. When I saw the preparation of red-onions, with the price, I would say people in Taiwan are really lucky to have such wonderful bakery. I really hate to prepare red-onions, as it is really time-consuming. But it plays such important parts in our traditional food.

It's not really savory, the taste is very sweet. Rough Ingredients: Sesame seeds (wet, only being used for the dough base before got into oven), pork fat (sliced and stir fried), shallots (deep fried 2 times so it stays crispy), fine sugar during minute 6:00 (a heck bunch of em, which makes this cake utterly sweet), flour, butter, 3 tablespoon of salt, liquid pork oil (from the fried pork fat earlier, it produces the oil), water.

@@mainaccount9696 when the sugar is put in, what is the pink (meat?) I took it to be more pork fat at first, just not cooked down. I could feel my arteries becoming solid as I watched....
@mainaccount96962 жыл бұрын
@@MelissaThompson432 Yes that one also pork fat (I just learned that the correct english is supposed to be lard lol). If you see min 4:32 they cut it to be bigger slices literally only to fry it to use the oil (honestly idk why it has to be THAT many while the pork oil only being used a little). Then the ones they didn't show is another batch of pork lard chopped smaller to be mixed into the dough. True, this cake no matter what version, is heavy in calories. If it's being shaped into tiny pies maybe a person can eat one. But the one I grew up with, always have it in medium-big size (like maybe diameter of 10 cm each) and my mom usually cut them up to 6-8 small pieces. I felt full with just 1 slice lmao
@mainaccount96962 жыл бұрын
@@MelissaThompson432 Ah I have to revised a bit of what I said, the ones I was talking about is not this wedding cake, but a moon pie. Moon pies also have different kind of fillings, but this sweet pork lard ones is also popular. Am I really the only person who is surprised and worried about two things. Surprised that a Taiwanese video has a description written in arabic and worried that a video about asian food has an account with a cat on it . I am being ironic about the kitten i know that they don't eat cats in Taiwan (since 2017) . But the Arabic description is intriguing ! Especially since they are clearly using pork ! This being said i love Taiwan, been there a few times, they have the best teas on the planet, it is super vegan and vegetarian friendly (ok maybe not this pie right here) and regarding this video, it is nice to see how clean this kitchen seems to be and they use premium ingredients and oil which is really commendable. I mean this meat was clearly breathing the morning this video was made.

@Pq-A-Bu well... this is anything but a cake. The title is a little bit clickbait, don't you think?
@burpburp7103 жыл бұрын
@@kaylas276062 Oh my god! savory cakes exist. You could all learn to be a bit less ignorant about the rest of the world.
@ade-oluwaspov2063 жыл бұрын
@@silviabinatti9487 They said "Chinese Traditional" cake. That means cake according to Chinese tradition. Every culture has their own cake. It may not be what you are used to, but it is what it is.
@beths32883 жыл бұрын
@@ade-oluwaspov206 Then it's not "cake". Why not use the Chinese name for what this is, which is most certainly NOT cake. It's xi bing, or xian bing. The word "cake" is associated just because that's how westerners celebrate so that's the name westerners attached to the food. But it is not "cake". We might as well start calling sugar/flour cake "fish dumplings." It would be just as misleading. People are not ignorant just because others use an incorrect term to describe something familiar.

Wow, I have seen these at the local Asian Mart but never knew what they were. These look so delicious, I love the process on how they make them; when you think they will do it one way they surprise you. Excellent video!
