That’s because the English translator is sliiiightly misunderstanding his character. His funny parts are great, I love them so much. But sometimes he doesn’t pull back enough when he’s supposed to sound serious, one example is the infamous “#WOW” he said when Riddle is literally crying. Cater is good at reading the room, and yet the English translation doesn’t show that sufficiently. Also, one clarification, I’m not going to speak for everyone, but me and my friends don’t hate English Cater, we just think he deserves better translations 😔

As someone who has worked on localization (not for this game), I gotta rant about this for a hot second. Drier, more serious translations aren't necessarily more professional, often times they're not even to trying to be localizations. Sure, the fanTLs may sometimes be more faithful to what the original script says word for word, but to have that they will often give up the spirit behind how and why something is said. Sometimes you do seemingly silly stuff like Cater's dialogue to remain faithful to the soul and personality of the original product. Some people may not like it, and that's fine. But this is simply how localization works.

@@AnglosArentHuman Localization is fine and as someone who has done fan TLs before I also agree with you, I honestly don’t like having to stick to the original script so much just because it’s safer, creative liberties are important. However, if the goal of localisation is to keep true to the soul of the character, Cater would never NEVER say “#WOW” when Riddle is crying. His many other brilliant lines are indeed a result of localization and most of them work great! But lines like “#WOW” show me that some translators in the translation team doesn’t understand his character well, it’s not the problem of localisation. I really like Cater. And when he’s being chill and funny in English, I still like him. But sometimes he really really doesn’t sound like himself, so I really really think the translation did him dirty 😭
