Sorry guys, had to reupload! The original had only single channel audio and it would be a crime to hear it run with only one speaker!
@PacificNorthwestHillbilly10 ай бұрын
Also I made a comment in the previous upload mentioning the idea of not even adding fuel until the 2nd or 3rd start attempt. I think just letting the engine heat up using the engines compression instead of dousing it with freezing cold diesel might make it start easier and is probably easier on the engine.

Just looking at the D4 is enough to appreciate it, doesn't need to move! To make the (perhaps pointless) comparison with intake heaters on modern diesel tractors/ excavators, they require between 20-30 secs of activation before turning the engine. Noticed you gave the D4 about 10 secs bursts. Just a thought.

For winter work, an infrared bulb in a clamp on reflector ( or two ) on the oil pan and intake manifold should do wonders. Plug them in,, drink a couple of favorite beverages,,,bang! A cop in Northern Oregon taught me that in 77 when it was so much more weather than recently. Or a block heater is wonderful as I’m sure you know…..makes things seem like spring for the engine.

@einfelder826210 ай бұрын
Probably would start better if you run the intake heaters a lot longer. Glow plugs run longer and heat the air in the chamber a lot more.
@thomasr.miller555310 ай бұрын
Have you try using a Heat Gun into the intake? CORDLESS HEAT GUNS on ANAZON 😁 A block heater in the radiator hose ? Grate videos thanks
@nathansmithconsulting10 ай бұрын
Looking good. Question, is your "generator" or alternator a 6v or 12v unit? I can't remember how you dealt with that during the rebuild. I put an electric starter on my 40's d6-5r but my generator is 6 volts. Just using a solar charger right now but during the winter I am not sure if that will cut it for several starts a day.

Something to consider is to install an engine heater. This will make it start easier and be less stress on all the components when it is this cold. All you would have to do is plan on when you would want to use it and plug it in an hour or two before you are needing to use the machine.
@Frank-Thoresen10 ай бұрын
I came to comment on the engine block heater too. Absolutely great to keep the engine healthy without stressing it. A cheap investment.
@alspeers69313 ай бұрын
Yes and yes ,block heatersare a great investment better for the engine components and really saves battery wear,either is crap.

Hey Matt I couldn’t tell in the video if you were doing it or not - but do you think that while you were cranking the engine to hold the intake heater on to provide additional heat sucking through the intake. I know I’ll do that with glow plugs with good success, I’ll also hold the glow plugs on to help smooth out the engine running when it’s cold. Maybe you were I just couldn’t tell. Thanks
@PacificNorthwestHillbilly10 ай бұрын
Yup, I have it wired up so the heaters always turn on when the engine cranks!
@SuperDriver37910 ай бұрын
A tip, if you’ll put you a Vice grip on the top of your rain cap, to hold it wide open with the weight of the pliers it’ll blow most the smoke when you start it away from you, I don’t know about you but on my big cats my eyes would be watering trying to get them going and I’d get a migraine, after it’s going you can get the pliers back and continue on about it otherwise as it is, my grandpa showed me that trick many years ago. It’s been a lifesaver. A small hole and a bungee cord is needed on the bigger rain caps, but a beefy set of Vice grips would serve you fine.

I know this is kind of late, but I would suggest that you put the intake heater on a switch that is separate from the starter switch. I know that in my RAM, my intake heater cycles a number of times after the engine starts so it would be good if you could activate the heater even while the starter is engaged.
@The7770174 ай бұрын
If you need a pony motor I might know where you can get your hands on one. My grandpa used to have three of them just laying around his shop up in Bonners ferry Idaho. I still might be able to get my hands on one
@davecallas527510 ай бұрын
Poor man’s block heater. Tarp in the engine compartment and run an old school trouble light with incandescent bulb in along block.
@rc569310 ай бұрын
Just a thought, and you might have already. A gear reduction starter would probably help quite a bit without a pony motor and should eliminate any need for ether

I have found [from a lot of old time diesel mechanics/ operators] and exp. with my own equipment, that a touch of either on such cold starts will get it started sooner and surer, will not injure that tough old cat.

If you can retrofit some old headlights to the canopy with LED in it. Your visibility in dark should improve by a lot. Not sure how you plan doing any additional electric works on the D4. However im sure the lights would add a lot. If you would live further up north, a block heater would be a must have. I would say this was one easy start for a machine that old.

My father had Caterpillar tractors all his adult life. When l bought a new BELARUS tractor, and started immediately just using electric starter and decompressor below freezing, he was amazed. I'll use magnetic oil pan heater below 20°fahr, rarely use glow plug. That looked like alot of cranking 😊
