The first time I climbed up and sat in the seat of a D8 was the moment I knew what I wanted to do for a living for most of my working life. My first D8 was the 46a model which had moved on to hydraulics although the one I ran still had a pony motor for starting. I really miss no longer operating them now that I'm retired.

My dad owned a D8 H and had the engine overhauled , had the engine painted white with the valve covers chromed along with exhaust stack. Had a Kelly ripper on the rear modify to bury telephone cable. Clean out the tracks every day after use to be ready the next day! It was his pride and joy.

I had an old D8-2U about 30 year ago. Good old machine that I bought for clearing out fence rows and building terraces. Cable blade was run off the rear winch so was a little hard to root out big locust trees....didn’t have enough hands to run 3 clutches and winch lever! Incidentally , the dry clutch will rust stuck if left engaged but will swell thicker if left disengaged...... requiring readjustment. Cat is proud of their parts...... pony motor clutch was $40-50 ! But it paid for itself.... both farms sold for 5 or 6 times more than what I paid for them. I’m not sure if Cat management has the pride and honor that it had 60 years ago.

Fix the pony motor, get it so it will run and start reliably. Paint it, put new decals on, and double your money (or start building farm ponds and clearing fence rows). Make that little boy pick up the roots the dozer leaves behind. That was my life for the first 20 years.

Let's go out and start a D8 that has been setting outside for 15 years. We don't need to check the fluid levels just pull it to get it started. It won't steer just pull and push it. Injector not working just tighten it down don't remove and see if it needs adjusting. I think a high school mechanics class would do this start-up better than good old Papa's Old Machine Garage.

If you replace the yoke for the injection pump, it has a height adjustment, and you have to set the flywheel to the cylinder your fixing to set it! The alignment marks on the rack and injection pump are to make sure each pump starts and end injection at the same delivery point. I use a old pump on a bench to test nozzles from these old machines, it is over forty six years old that I know of!! People are still bring them in to have them worked on, getting fewer and fewer because of emission standards!!!! sad!!!!

In the early 70's I ran a few different versions of a D8. My fav was one that was just a little older than this one. It had a double winch on the back, one for blade lift and the other was for what ever you might need it for. I used it mostly for dragging logs around when we started a new strip mining operation. I'm not even sure if they knew what a ripper tooth was back then. One that I didn't care for at all was an old slide bar D8. Talk about old. I walked that thing out of a track on the side of a levee. Spent the rest of a very long day helping the mechanic get that track back on.

Hi, Papa's Old Machine Garage. Those gears on the injector pumps DO NOT control the timing of the injectors. Instead they control the amount of fuel which the injector pumps deliver to the injectors. The timing is controlled by the cams that lift the injector pumps. You got the cable back to front in the wedge pocket. It is supposed to be the other way around so that there is a direct line of pull on the cable instead of the kink that you now have in this video. The white smoke coming from the engine oil breather could well be caused by blow-by, which may be due to engine wear, or it may be due to having stood for 15 years. These engines should be idled down'' for five minutes, especially after working hard but even after a full revs engine run like you did in the video to allow the turbocharger to slow down and cool down. The whistle that can be heard after the engine was shut off was the turbo winding down and it would not have had oil flowing to it to keep it lubricated after the engine stopped. But it'z your turbo. Glad you got it home and thanks for sharing. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
