Cat over the road truck engines were tough, but they were too heavy, about a thousand pounds heavier than a Mack engine, and the Mack had more horse power, plus the Cat engine cost a fortune when time for a rebuild, as compared to Mack, Cummins, and Detroit. Caterpillar`s claim to fame was in the thirties, thru the sixties, with their earth moving equipment. Their engineers during that time span designed the best, toughest, and most reliable equipment on the face of the earth. I still prefer Cat dozers made in the 1950s, with the pony motor starting system. They are tough, dependable, and they just will not die. They do not have any creature comforts like today`s dozers, but men were men in those days, and today " men " are having difficulty deciding what sex they are, and what restroom to use. How far we have fallen.

Seems like an ad for CATs competition and them throwing their hands in the air! 🙂 They certainly ended up doing that for a road truck engine market where they couldn't be bother with meeting emissions targets and left it to the competition.

At around 3 min is a clip of my father. Looks like hed be around 30 or so there. If its early 1970's thatd be about rite. He is almost 80 now and we showed him the clip. He said he remembers a bunch of CAT people coming around asking questions on the job. I would really like to get a copy of the clip with him in it. If anyone could help me out with that some how I'd be great full.

Why don't I just send you that small clip to your email? I can probably send a 5-10 second clip on Gmail - bigger than that won't work.

That brought back memories. I had an IH 500C thatI really liked, it was getting old and tired. So I bought a new JD 350C. Worst machine that I have ever owned. It failed many times. It was not abused. The dealer would repair it, then about 200 hours later it would be down again. I was so happy to see the 350 C gone. Then I got a IH TD 8, that was a good machine. I then up graded to a newer Cat D4C Series 2, I ran that one for about 15 years and got a Cat D4C Series 3 that I really like.

There are a lot of machines they don't support anymore that are not so old and still doing the job. There is pretty good aftermarket stuff out there but a good D7G still commands good money. Lots missing from the Cat parts book these days.

I don't think so. Many contractors prefer a old D8H than a modern D8L (like those use by Israeli forces), Same as a cat 977L instead of a 983 rear engined traxcavator. They were easier to fix compared to modern tractors. Same a International TD-25B compared to a Dressta TD-25G.

This must have been a rah rah film for internal consumption. In 2020 Deere is still big, Komatsu is still very big. As is Cat. Fiat Allis and Harvester are going or gone. Terex is still there, sort of. It's a long story. Cat dropped out of the overthe road truck engine business. Cummins and Detroitare still big there, and Volvo and Mack make their own engines. For mining equipment it's mainly down to Cat and Komatsu, each with a full line of surface mining equipment. There are still bit players like Hitachi and Belaz.

The Johnny come lately fly by night guy at 3 min is still in business. Thats my father he's almost 80 now, still comes out from time to time to run equipment and we are 3rd generation earthmovers. For what its worth tho over 90% of the fleet now is CAT. The change over was complete in the early 2000's. Were waiting for the "junk" Hitachi to die however, I dont expect that any time soon.

The bigger cat equipment is awesome, but god do I loath their skid loaders and mini excavators. I think Kubota tops them on that. The cat skid loaders are gutless washing machines.

No way lol, the D series are the smoothest and most comfortable skid steers I've ever ran, our 279D is competitibe in power, definitely not the strongest, but not weak. Kubotas are cheap made, reliable but rattly and rough riding, rigid undercarriage doesn't let them make full use of their great track power in uneven terrain. Cat and Kubota skid steers run the same engines too, at least until next year when the 255 and 265 come out. I had the chance to run the next generation 265 Caterpillar, and I think anyone would be pleasantly suprised by the difference between it and the D series product. First class power.

The 955Ls and 977Ls of this era are still being used and rebuilt, you seldom see a Deere or Komatsu of the same era around today, the guys who ponied up back then got their money's worth. Time will tell for today's equipment, emissions rules hurt every brand nowadays.
