They're very easy to grow IF you can get your hands on some seeds -- just scatter them in an area that stays damp all through the spring, summer, and autumn, and some should come up the following spring. I did this when I had a house whose outdoor faucet was on the north side of the house and had a slow drip. Touch-me-not (also known as jewelweed) is an annual but grows from a seedling to a big bush in just a matter of months before dying away when the weather gets too cold. It's fun to gently touch the seedpods and see them immediately SPROING away! You can also hold a leaf underwater to see it become covered with tiny air bubbles that give it a silver sheen -- that's how it came to be called jewelweed. Very pretty plants, and especially good for teaching your kids (or grandkids or nieces/nephews or neighborhood kids or whoever) about science and nature...

The mechanism of how they explode, as the 2016 article "Morphomechanical Innovation Drives Explosive Seed Dispersal" found, is that the outer layer of the pod walls uses their internal pressure to contract and generate tension. Traditionally, scientists thought that explosive seed pods use tension built passively by differential contraction of the pod walls as they dry. However, it still works with hydrated cells. The cell walls in the seed pod are made of lignin, which is rigid but contains groves that act like hinges of a door, allowing it to open. At maturity, the wall of the seed pod wants to coil along its length to release tension, but it has a curved cross-section preventing this. This is similar to how a slap bracelet works. When the cells in the seed pod are pressurized, they expand in depth while contracting in length; like the way an air mattress expands in depth, when inflated, but contracts in width. When enough stress builds up or it is disturbed by your hand, the cross-section of the seed pod wall flattens , causing sudden mechanical failure of the structure and explosive coiling.

Omg... thanks to this video, you just gave me a flashback of this type of plant (or maybe there are same?!) that I was playing with as a kid. It's been over 20 years if not 22 now. How amazing to recover a hidden memory which happened to be a good time. We were carefully picking the plant and throwing them in the water so we could see them explode right there! It's cool how the caterpillar's prolegs stays at the rear rather than spread out in the midsection like most caterpillars I've seen, they can grab onto the branch away from the pod, so when it explode they won't be flung. It actually worked on a few shot in this video!
