I finally got into Cat's Squirrel and it's amazing. Worked backwards from Clapton/Cream to Doctor Ross, a really full~sounding one man band (gtr, dms, hca, stomp). Bought a Good Doctor collection and am blown away how hill country his stuff is and how strong his harp is. like little walter type sounds but from a rack while you're busy working every other limb and appendage in different directions and rhythms plus singing right on time with expression, which is a miracle. Even John Hammond Jr didn't use a kick drum, but what if he had?? The other thing about Ross is every song is in Open G, so have some fun! There's lots of old blues talk about a how that woman is like or has ways like a "Cat's Squirrel In A Tree". Check "Going Away" by Dave Snaker Ray! What's a cat squirrel, or cat's squirrel? I took the latter first. A squirrel, though presently free in a tree, belongs all along to the cat, who will one day kill him. Pretty good I thought. Then I went looking at Google images and I think they're all fake like a jackalope or a snipe. That's as far as I got. The term must have had great meaning over a century ago in order to get embedded in the universal blues lyrics repository built by the people who invented the blues. Can't give up. Any hints?

Educational and entertaining as always, pal. I adore Robert Petway. After hearing the Catfish Blues the same way for years (hadn't heard Skip's version at that point), I was astounded at how different this recording is. Always disappointed that it ends so soon, and that more people don't play it this way.

Great great cover! Given the new release of The Rolling Stones cover of Muddy's Rolling Stone Blues, I suspect there'll be some revived interest in the original incarnation. It would be interesting to learn how Muddy got his hands on it, or if there were other variations between the two.

I've been playing acoustic blues for many decades... Nice performance. Didn't Johnny Winter do a version of this? I got turned on to metal bodied guitars by Johnny. I got a '32 Style 0 in the late 70's... I never liked it. I still have it. It's in rough shape, cracked side (yes, it is nickle plated brass). It is for sale, original cone. I've been told it can be repaired. I've caught a few of your YT performances... like your stuff... You've done your work. Kudos! I like slide on an acoustic best. Being a self-appointed acolyte of Paul Geremia, who did all his slide work with wood, I like it best. I find resonators have a limited frequency response... but that's just my opinion. I've a cassette tape of Paul doing Johnson's TerraPlane Blues.... He literally channels Robert. Deep stuff.

Love the guitar on this. Went back and listened to the original. It's a really neat riff but you really filled it out with the strumming. Is there a particular cover you were inspired by or is this mostly your own interpretation of the music?

I've been playing this in standard tuning with a capo at the 3rd fret and using E~position riffing. Are you in an open key such as G?
@dominickl445611 ай бұрын
Yes I believe it’s open G not sure though entirely but it would make sense considering it was a very popular tuning in that era
@jimsliverootsculturemusic2 ай бұрын
@@dominickl4456 yes that's open G. Having jammed on that for a month, I see what he's doing. I had played the riff in standard tuning but it didn't roll like this!
