Welcome to NYC Karl ;) This has been going on in Time Square since they cleaned it up decades ago. The child character thing is relatively newer but I bet at least 10 years now it's been like this? The guys with the CDs is the one that's been a long time scam especially in the 90s. Make your way to the Toronto area! Being from NYC and not here, I always wished for more Indian food/culture in NYC but now in Toronto it is like a little version of Westernized India. Very unique, don't see another Indian diaspora like this in the world even in the UK. Come and stuff your face withy good food please would love to see a Canada video about the Indian community one day!

Time square is horrible. In 2019 walking through there I had two guys talking about how they were trying to get into the music industry with their new rap music, so I played along because honestly why would they need to approach some random person on the street to do that. I said I worked for a music label in Europe. They followed me two blocks, insisting I should take a CD for free, so I agreed... And then they asked for a donation, to which I said no, so they asked me for the CD back and then headed back towards time square hurling loud insults at me down the street. Amusing :)

Most NYC residents and natives stay away from Times Square unless they're passing through to get to shows. It's mostly for tourists, which is why it's full of scammers. They know people not from here don't know any better and are susceptible to folks who seem friendly. Times Square is really not representative of the city as a whole, so I hope you were able to visit some of the outer boroughs to see how most regular New Yorkers live. As always, kudos to you for exposing scams wherever you may find them, ESPECIALLY in my hometown!

I couldn't believe then that someone would lie to my face like that, but it was a lesson learned.

Did you just move to New york? You act like such things are out of the ordinary. That's what many people find attractive about the city. The "freaks". As long as they're not harming you, and you use your common sense, you should appreciate the fact that you live in a tolerant environment where "weird" people allowed to do their thing. If you've ever lived in a suffocating small town environment where you can't express yourself you would know what I'm talking about. As a moderately wealthy tourist this kind of hustling really , really puts me off visiting these places . I am well travelled and perfectly able to say no or stand my ground , but it's really tiresome like constantly having to swat flies away on a hot day also some of these hustlers really do get aggresive sometimes and who needs that shit spoiling their day as a visitor to these places . Nope I tend to spend my money elsewhere . Where it is valued to the extent that I am not hassled walking around public spaces . Keep up the good work bro , it's a worthy thing you do .

6:36 At the Eiffel Tower I was also harassed by a group of women. If you MERELY READ the sign they are holding they expect payment. We were told to divert our eyes. I, a bit of a rebel at the time, was like “screw that, I’ll look where I want”. Made eye contact with one, and decided to look up and read her sign. Instantly she shuffled over with her hand out and goes “excuse me, money for prayer?” And I said no thank you. She then insisted, by me reading the sign, the prayer was finished. I can’t remember if she was the same person who was trying to raise money for a deaf school or not. But we were warned those dead school things are a scam as well. Unfortunately very few are actually raising money for deaf/blind schools. So the ones that are real.. go underfunded because everyone thinks it’s a scam. We were told to make donations directly. The SICKEST thing was when we went to an orphanage in Italy and people were outside asking for money for the orphanage. We were immediately told ALL OF THEM were completely unaffiliated.

Hi Karl here's my experience. I am Mexican and me and my brother went to Hollywood in 2015. People on the streets started harassing us trying to sell us tours to celebrity homes. They literally chased us for minutes even if we said no no not interested, thank you...the more polite you sounded, the more insistent they were. Another displeasing event that happened to us was that near the walk of fame, a super super tall black man, young, approached my brother (my brother is 6'1 and looked short next to this man) and said to him he was gonna "give him" a CD for free, then he asked money and when my brother said he didn't have 5 dollars to give him, he violently snatched the CD off my brother's hands. He turned his back on us and I tapped his super tall shoulder and said to him "You just made us waste our time!" he said "don't touch me don't touch me, leave me alone" I was super angry. These scammers feel entitled to demand money from tourists and when we say no, they act rudely. We learned the hard way and in following days we had to end up telling people we were from Texas and not foreign so they'd leave us alone.

Dang. I haven’t been to Manhattan since 2000. Things have really changed in a quarter of a century. I don’t remember seeing scammers everywhere like this. There were always guys running shell games and selling pirated CDs/DVDs/clothing/bags, but I never saw people just demanding money for photos or anything like that. Disney could easily post lawyers around Times Square and round up people to sue for copyright infringement by the dozen. That would shut those scammers down faster than a heavy police presence, I’d imagine.
