I worked at EASTERN for 21 years,got to ride jumpseat a couple of times on the 1011,great airplane,the crews loved them.

Beautiful! My Dad made command at CX in the late 80s when he was 32 and on the TriStar. I remember being a kid and just astounded how big the cockpit windows were. You could see the ground and almost the nose gear from the jump seat!

I also got my command on that beautiful jet at CX in 1990 at age 33. Best time at CX. L1011 and 747-8 best aircraft I ever flew.

@@warbird747 You'd definitely would know the old man then. He did the bus, classic and 744 during his time there, said the same about the 8F. Retired on the 777. A great airline at the time. In the late 00s I looked at joining as an SO and got talked out of it by him.

The L1011 had it all over the DC-10. Lockheed, as usual, built the absolute best aircraft the technology of the day made possible, while Douglas cut corners to beat them to market with an inferior product. The TriStar had it all: beauty, speed, comfort & safety on wings- a truly classic airliner. Sad to see the number of active L1011s is rapidly dwindling.

Worst mistake was trusting the damn europoor company rolls royce, ge and pw had been been building better engines at that time but lockheed didn't choose them and payed the price

Awesome mate thanks so much for uploading. My old man got command on the TriStar at CX in '89 and still flies their 777s. I've got a gold tie clip of the Tristar Sir Swire gave him back in the day. Amazing machine and great memories of being a kid on the flight deck!

My one first flight on the L1011 was from DFW to San Diego. Was headed to boot camp. Flew back out of LAX, again on the L1011. These would be my only flights on this beautiful aircraft.

Flew on CX711 from HKG to SIN back in 1978 and got a jump seat. The center console had a TV screen showing the flight path between two points and dotted line showing location of A/C. That's very high tech back in the 70s. Thanks for posting this video - really brings back memories.

@trent8002003 As someone who's flown the MD11 and been in the jump seat often on the L1011... I wholly agree... The Tristar was the most advanced of the 1970's jumbo's.. and it was fast and had good range.

I really love the L-1011!......Only got to fly on it once.....Am glad I did......I always wondered how they got the name for it........DC-10......L-1011..........Makes me think of Spinal Tap......."Yeah, but these speakers go to 11!"......Of course, that's abusurd seeing as how the plane was developed LONG before the movie, but I always find it funny!......LOL

I think what doomed the Tristar was the delays in getting the engines. It put the whole project back and created a gap gladly filled by the DC-10.

I remember several years back, acquiring a vinyl LP record with an old Quad hifi I'd just bought, featuring playback (ATC and cabin crew conversations) of a Cathay Pacific flight between Hong Kong and Honolulu..I believe they wee offered to first class passengers..I didn't particularly want this piece of memorabilia and I was offered a few dollars for it by a local record shop...I got more than a few dollars for it after auctioning it on eBay and I shipped it to a guy in Germany who was a L1011 fanatic!

Lockheed needed to sell 500 planes to break even, but in 1981 announced production would end with delivery of the 250th and last plane on order in 1984. The TriStar's failure to achieve profitability caused Lockheed to withdraw from the civil aircraft busine.

the L 1011 sure makes you think that the boys at McDonnell Douglas got lazy with the DC 10 bu just strapping a third engine on the tail. Lockheed went the extra step for a better low speed control and lowered the third engine the result it flew better and looked better

Lockheed blunder by select ing RR engines. RR was in financial trouble and this delayed entry into the market Douglas DC 10 entered first and never looked back IF only they would have selected P^W or GE engines, it would have been different. Douglas DC 10 was first and outlasted Tristars by decades. FedEx, N550FE is still in service. Delivered to AA in September, 1972. Tristar was advanced but mismanagement was very costly.

Sorry to differ 2300magnum. The L1011 "S" duct DID NOT reduce the thrust of the RB211-22B or the RB211-524 engines. Lockheed were very concious of the possible impact of the "S" duct design and ensured it was, in the L1011, able to allow the engine to produce the same thrust as the wing engines by limiting the angle of the bends and maintaining the diameter.

@Zlin0035 Wrong. The Tristar-100 could barely reach 4000nm. The Tristar-200 did little better at around 4200nm at a price of less load. The Tristar 1 was only good for 2800-3000nm. BA never operated any Tristar-100. It only flew the 1, 200 and 500. BA could have flown Tristar 200 from LA to Heathrow with a considerably reduced payload - light underfloor cargo and/or light passenger load.

Had the Tristar been provided with an engine option, the DC10 wouldn't have had a chance. Lockheed should have gotten GE on board as the 2nd engine option.

@viceroytennis Poor marketing by Lockheed caused the Tristar to loose against Douglas. Lockheed should of taken commitment orders instead of relying on "interest" of its aircraft. It should of also used two engine choices instead of relying on RR. Shame, the most advance aircraft of its time yet was not given its full credit it deserved! RIP L-1011

Of course the Tristar was the best. Lockheed put everything they knew about aerodynamics into Tristar. That is why the Tristar never crashed due to design flaws. In contrast, the DC-10 family had many accident as there were loads of design flaws in it. It was a pity that Lockheed lost a huge sum of money from L-1011...

@airboy1997 Not quite. Technologically, the Tristar was superior to the DC10, which was a conservative design. The Tristar was let down by Rolls Royce's late development of growth engine so that a long range Tristar (Tristar 500) to compete with the DC10-30/40 appeared too late.

Indeed, the Tristar was superior to the DC10 in every way except one : range. And for that, Lockheed had Rolls Royce to thank. The near collapse of RR denied it the ability to grow the basic RB211 to power a long range Tristar to compete with the DC10-30 until it was too late.

Having GE engines wouldn't have been enough to save the 1011. The reason it lost the race against the DC-10 was one of cost. The 1011 had more standard features somit just cost more. The DC-10 was a cheap aircraft. Only 3 hydraulic systems vs 1011 having 4. Because the 1011 had more features Lockheed couldn't match the price of a DC-10 thus the 1011 was more expensive to buy and operate. I flew it for 5 years when I worked for Lockheed.

Hmmm......nope. I know it's subjective but most people would agree that compared to the sleek L-1011, the DC10 looks decidedly clumsy and heavy.

Beautiful tail end on that aircraft but that was its flaw. That "S" shaped air duct to the RB 211 constricted that engine to only 80-85% of its max power output. 15% loss of power output from one engine greatly reduces payload.
