Cathedral Hill community excavation in Downpatrick (2018 and 2019)

In 2018 and 2019 ArcPal's Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork excavated part of the medieval abbey that occupied Downpatrick's Cathedral Hill before the predecessor of the present cathedral was built there in the 14th century. The dig was run as a community archaeology project in collaboration with Down County Museum.

Spent 2 weeks in the archaeology lab on Elmwood Avenue as a 19 year old in 1994. I think the archaeologist I worked under was called John Davidson. We went on a mini dig at the Giant’s Ring in Belfast, and found the whole experience very fascinating indeed. Ever since then (or admittedly a decade before then) , I’ve been entranced by the whole area. I also spent 23 years in Downpatrick working, living and raising a family, so naturally have an affinity with the area near the cathedral as many history buffs would concur. My mum and dad bumped into the Time Team crew in 1997 I think it was, whilst out to fetch the weekly shop, i unwisely spent the afternoon in the pub, and missed some of my idols!!
