According to Constantine's DAI one of the Serbian tribes was nicknamed „Pagani“ (what Constantine himself translates as “unbaptized in the Slavic tongue” (DAI, 29, 81) indicating that the others were already Christianized. When the time came for Serbs to accept Christianity from Constantinople, they were not baptized collectively, as was the case with Russians or Bulgarians, but the baptism was done during the process that took place village by village or clan by clan and, depending on the Saint-day they were Christened, each family acquired a particular Saint patron.

Posno isn't vegetarian slava because you still eat fish, but the difference is that it's less caloric when it's posno. :)

Posno is vegan, meaning no animal product is used. The only protein allowed on posna slava is fish, but no eggs or milk. So you may say it is pescatarian.

One more thing... Before, it was a custom to invite your guests personally, nowadays, not so much. But, if you are invited once, that invitation lasts forever. Also, it is very rude and impolite to decline an invitation. It's like an insult for the host. But, you can always call in a timely manner and say you're sorry you can't make it, and that's it. :)

Charles Cather Filip is correct... if the food isn't what Eastern Orthodox and Catholics would consider "lean" (lean food would be vegetables and fish, since fish isn't considered to be meat), then it's called "mrsna" (in other words, "mrsna" means that they would eat meat from a cow, chicken, lamb... and not just vegetables and fish)... it's called like that both in Serbian and Croatian and in dialects from south-east Serbia. "Masna" would just mean "greasy"... but lean food can be greasy if you use vegetable oil... just because something is "greasy" it doesn't have to mean that it's not lean. "Nemrs" means that non-lean food isn't eaten that day. People often call it "post" (fasting), but "post" isn't exactly the same as "nemrs", although both mean abstinence from specific food or drinks... For example, if someone wants to take the Holy Communion (in Serbian and Croatian the Holy Communion is called "pričest", both by Eastern Orthodox and Catholics), he is not supposed to eat any food (not even bread) or drink anything other than water (or medication if he really needs to take some medication) for a specific period of time and that's called "post od hrane i pića" (abstinence from food and drinks)... it's similar to how someone Jewish would fast on Yom Kippur... Catholics usually fast like that for at least one hour before the Holy Communion and Eastern Orthodox usually fast from the moment they wake up on that day (Eastern Orthodox usually have a Liturgy when they receive the Holy Communion in the morning... Catholics can have it in the evening too). For Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, there's also "post i nemrs" when non-lean food isn't eaten and when people should abstain from eating as much food as they would usually do... for example, Catholics and Eastern Orthodox would fast like that on the Ash Wednesday (called "Pepelnica" in Serbian and Croatian) and the Good Friday (called "Veliki Petak" in Serbian and Croatian).

Dialects from south-east Serbia don't just make up their own rules... although those dialects haven't been officially standardized, that doesn't mean that someone can just make up his own rules or his own words. Some people sometimes make some mistakes, but that doesn't mean that everyone says it like that. If someone notices that someone else made a mistake, he/she would usually say how to correctly say it. I'm interested in languages and I like learning languages... so I can write a lot about various languages and dialects... this is going to be somewhat longer (not very long, but not as short as some average message)... not sure if you are going to read the whole message... but if you are interested in languages, continue reading... Languages and dialects usually develop specific rules for a reason... if something became like a rule and many people say it that way, it's often for a reason. I think that the explanation for why people who speak some dialect say something the way they do can often be explained by looking how that would be said in other languages from the region and by looking which languages have been spoken in that area during it's history. Those dialects from south-east Serbia have many similarities with Macedonian and Bulgarian... for example, those dialects use "će" just like "ще" is used in Bulgarian or "ќе" in Macedonian... I mean, "we will go" would be "će idemo" in dialects from south-east Serbia ("ide" means "he/she/it goes", "idem" means "I go", "idemo" means "we go", but with "će" in front of it it means "we will go"), in Macedonian it would be "ќе одиме" (ke odime)... in standard Serbian it would be "ićićemo" ("ići" means "to go" and when "-ćemo" is added to it, then it means "we will go"... if just "-će" was added instead of "-ćemo", then it would mean "he/she/it will go"), but it can also be "mi ćemo ići" (mi = we, ćemo = (we) will, ići = (to) go)... Serbo-Croatian grammar sometimes, in some cases, seems more similar to English grammar to me, but sometimes I have an impression like it's more similar to Turkish grammar in some cases. In Turkish, "git" would mean "go", "gidecek" would be "he/she/it will go", "gideceğim" would be "I will go", "gideceğimiz" would be "we will go"... suffix "-cek" is used in a similar way there like when "-će" is used as a suffix in Serbo-Croatian. In some cases, I have an impression like the structure of sentences in dialects from south-east Serbia seems similar to the structure of sentences in Turkish too... for example, if you wanted to ask is something fresh in a dialect from south-east Serbia, that would be "taze li je" ("taze" would mean "fresh", adding "li" as a separate word after it would turn "taze" into a question" and "je" is like "is") or it can be shortened just to "taze li" (still the same meaning, but people sometimes leave out that "je" part in dialects from south-east Serbia)... in Turkish, "is it fresh" would be "taze mıdır" ("taze" would also mean "fresh", "mı" would turn "taze" into a question and "dır" would be like "is") or it can be shortened just to "taze mı" (still the same meaning... that "dir" part has a similar meaning like "je" in Serbian, but people sometimes leave it out). There are also many words that standard Serbo-Croatian shares with other languages from the region and many words that dialects from south-east Serbia share with other languages from the region, but sometimes some word that's used in some dialect from south-east Serbia is somewhat different than the word that's used in standard Serbian... for example, a "farm" is "farma" or "čitluk" in standard Serbo-Croatian, but in dialects from south-east Serbia it's "čiftlik" or "čiflik"... in Turkish it's "çiftlik", but in standard Serbo-Croatian, loan-words from Turkish that have the suffix "-luk" or "-lik", always end with "-luk" for some reason ("-lik" and "-luk" are just different forms of the same suffix in Turkish)... so it looks like the suffix "-lik" in "čiftlik" changed to "-luk" in standard Serbo-Croatian and that it remained unchanged in dialects from south-east Serbia, so that's why there's a difference. Suffix "-luk" is also used in Serbian sometimes (it has the same meaning as in Turkish... not sure how to explain it in English... it's maybe like when words in English end with "-ism")... I could write a lot more on this topic... this was just one very small part... I could probably write a whole book about it, if I wanted to.

One correction: Slava started way before the Ottomans. Serbs were pagans before they accepted Christianity, and every family/home/settlement had a god protector. So when they accepted Christianity, they modified that and started celebrating their Patron Saints instead.

Its not masno, its mrsno. And posno is not same as vegetarian, you can eat fish meat when its posna slava. And you should not eat dairy products, milk, cheese, or any other animal products like eggs and such. Not sure if vegetarians eat animal products or not...

I am also Serb but not ordinary one! I must say that all this traditions that we adopted are man made and have nothing to do with Jesus Christ and his teachings that was given by God. Jesus body means (his words) that is a symbol for bread or something of which human should live as a soul and not only as a material body of flesh. The Christ blood is a symbol for Holly Ghost which runs in our blood which is our life given by God. In short, when we listen Jesus teachings that is our bread which we should eat and live according to that. When we live those words, the Holly Ghost come to rest on us and person enters in to heavens kingdom which is here and now! But as usual, people were never interested in self realization, because it requires rigor, discipline and renunciation of many worldly things and habits, so people have introduced their human principles and habits into religion ,so that they can continue to enjoy this body as before. He who is a truly consecrated man, and who studies the scriptures regularly, studies them well knows what I am talking about, and he who does not do so, is sufficient to visiting the church for a few times, lighting candles there and three days in a whole year in which they eat forbidden food drink alcohol till laying dead in the name of Christ whom hey say is a god himself, while Jesus was clear about that, that he is only a messenger from God sent to people to give a message which can save pople from their sins if they live it. It is really sad what humans did from God words! The word of God is the standard by which man judges himself, not a God or Jesus!

Slava represents and is reminiscent of old family alliances with the God times when there were no faiths or nations, but people as the forefather of all nations Noah and his family had an alliance with God.
