Serbia Weekly #7.. American Family Moves to Serbia

Had the honor of sitting down with an American gentleman who moved his wife and 3 kids to to Serbia! Paul is originally from the great state of Texas. He met a Serb from Novi Sad on some tech job site, hired him , came to check out Novi Sad, loved it, opened a business here and moved his whole family over here! He had nothing but glowing things to say about Serbia, Serbs and the beautiful city of Novi Sad!

Do not come. There are very few business opportunities here, and salaries are very low-professors and surgeons have monthly salaries in 400-600 dollar range. People here, including closest relatives, are unlikely to help you when you are in trouble. Life in Serbia is so miserable that every year 40000 Serbians emigrates out of country. I would leave Serbia today if I had an opportunity to find decent job in another country. Most Serbian would do the same if they had an opportunity.

No Can Can, I do not tell you this because I am dumb, I tell you because I am clever and I see that soon great crisis and depression like in 1929 will spread worldwide. In such situation all will inevitably be forced to turn to finantial survival, not to pride and strenght. And Serbia will be hit hard in this crisis and I do not know how this family will survive in Serbia. And I am fed up with stories about proud and strenghtfull Serbians. In practise most Serbians are conformists who voted for dictators like Slobodan Milosevic because he enabled them lifelong-employment and other benefits they enjoyed in communist times, not for pride and strenght. Pride and strenght are not priorities of people in Serbia, its people now wants to join EU just to make more money.

I moved to Serbia about 2 1/2 years ago after living 10 years in Portugal. So far I'm quite pleased. Presently riding a motorcycle on a 4500+ mile 3-4 week trip through southern Europe. Heading towards Turin, Italy today on my way home. I've lived in many places around the US, West Africa and Europe. Serbia, so far, seems to fit my life best. But Blue Man has the right idea. Keep running down life in Serbia and that'll make others want to move elsewhere. Will keep the life in Serbia unchanged longer. Good move Blue Man.

@micssr *You are correct. Hospitality (Hospitalitet) is a word that more suitably relates to the Hotel and Restaurant service industry. Whereas “Gostoprimstvo” is legendary in Serbia, as it is a deeply rooted Serbian tradition that has been traced far back into our antiquity. The Serbian saying: “Gost je Svetinja” is translated into English as: “The Guest is Sacrosanct”......this means that a Guest of a Serb (in addition to being embraced in a welcoming fashion)....is coming under the protection and care of their Serbian Host.... This long respected Tradition is taken very seriously by the Serbian people....because GOSTOPRIMSTVO is directly linked to (both the individual and collective) Honor of the Serbian People.* *When it comes to the protection of Honor......a Serb tends to react a bit like a “Samurai”, 😉 lol.......I mean...Serbs are somewhat allergic to the word SRAMOTA (Shame)...so much so, that we practically break out in hives when we hear it....*

Yeah, Serbian who didn't learn Serbian language in 14 years. In the US you have to know not just English language, but their history to apply for the passport. It's a joke how he got Serbian passport.

But over time, I realised the freedom that I was missing and that I was living in Novi Sad, because I was born and raised in Novi Sad. So, I guess there are things that money just can't buy. No, it's not strange at all. Economy manipulation made it impossible for native Serbians to make a normal life in Serbia, which created a lot of space for them to live in Serbia on foreign income. The US government orchestrated that to occupy our country, since the US embassy has been governing Serbia since 2005. They hide it, officially, of course.

Charles, here in Serbia, young people are having a lot of trouble starting their own business, so, could you make a series of videos that talk, step by step, about how to start a business? You can do it with people that already started their business :) That would be a great project that can actually make a change and maybe keep some young people from leaving the country :D

I live in Chicago, two weeks ago it happened that I had to get emergency care. The total hospital bill was $ 12,000 I almost throw up after I saw. I stayed in hospital approximately 3 hours.

Great interview Charles and my hats off to Paul. Two great issues that I'd like to touch on. Medical costs in the USA can easily bankrupt you(even with insurance) and the quality of the doctors here is not that great. It's all about you coming back and making more money for the institution. My sons have both been misdiagnosed many times by US doctors and at a lot of urgent care places you don't even see a doctor but they charge crazy prices. The other issue is white flight and the suburbs that make you reliant on cars and fuel and driving. We don't have nice city centers, most inner cities are dangerous ghettos that white people don't want any part of and the schools there are awful. You will never have safe walkable inner city streets in the USA. That's why I liked Serbia when visiting. You can walk around and not worry about your safety.

By ancient Serbian customs and beliefs (before Christianity, in pagan times) guests are sent to us by our Serbian ancestors and you treat your guests as you would treat your great great grandfather or grandmother coming to your home. The most welcomed guests should be total strangers that come unannounced, because they as well might be the spirit of your ancestor coming to visit.

Regarding why the US doesn't have the lively centers full of people (and this could be seen as a pro or con) I'm from Chicago living in Montenegro. In US cities, there are tremendous amounts of businesses / entertainment catered towards families or kids. Bowling, arcades, jump houses, rock climbing, indoor skydiving, go-karts, mini golf, batting cages, great museums, amusement parks, skating rinks, ice skating, just so much... most of which are indoors and cost money. American families are just used to, and able, to pay for these kinds of entertainment. In Serbia/Balkans there really aren't many of these sort of businesses... it's just simple living.. the focus is on each other, enjoying walks with kids, parks, etc. It's really the most quality time you can have and it's free.

I wish you made it even longer. :) The fact that he moved together with the family over here is amazing. I'm turning 43 this month and when I was in school we had English from 4th grade in elementary school, now kids have English basically from preschool. And this is not optional. I follow Charles from the beginning, best luck to you both here. Yes, the unemployment is still a No1 problem here, then the monthly wage, corruption in all levels of the government, almost dictatorship regime... A lot of people are leaving Serbia because of all that and I hope that things will be better here at least for my children.

The cheapest IT worker in Belgrade is like 1500-2000 EUR/mth. The average developer who is really a junior but bills out as a seasoned developer is like 2-2.5k/mth. No one in IT makes 300 EUR a month.

Guess what, our MILITARY staff has only 350-370e pay. Im talking about the staff with basic ranks, pvt/cpl/sgt.. I worked in the army so i know. The job and the payment are the ONLY negativities here. Paul spotted it right away. Anyway, continue with your work man, love it!
