This is actually an apt description. She tried to parade her daughter around where she could to look impressive, showing up in her best dresses. Now it did give Sophia the chance to meet the King of Prussia ie Frederick the Great, and Sophia impressed him with her intelligence and conversation. He actually sent another invitation to a fancy banquet for everyone to meet her, and her mother DIDN’T BRING HER. She pulled out all stops on her looks so she could rub elbows with nobles and overlooked she wasn’t the one they wanted. The king had to put it bluntly for her and say Where is Sophia? Go bring her.

Johanna was all ariund a terrible, cruel person. I remember reading about the king of Prussia sending them money so that way Catherine (then Sophia), would have something presentable to wear when meeting the sovereign. Imagine their surprise when Johanna enters, dressed to the nines, and her child follows in a dress two sizes too small. Frederick had to ask if there was something suitable for her to wear. The dress was a little big on her, but she was plesant enough.

It's something you'll see a lot of you start looking into the personal lives of historical rulers. So much generational trauma. For example, queen Victoria's mother was wildly abusive, victoria herself was then also pretty abusive, and made a mess of her own children and grandchild, at which point we get to Tsarina Alexandra, the last Tsarina of Russia who also wildly abused her own children. The cycle stops there, for obvious reasons.

Cathrine feared her son because he was the rightful heir to the throne and she was technically supposed to rule until he becomes of age. She spread rumours that Pavel wasn't Peter's son to make sure he wouldn't overthrow her. She ordered a grown woman to get impregnated by her 17yo son to make sure he's able to produce an heir after a severe illness. She took away all his sons, including the one who was born from the aforementioned event. She forced him to give up the only land he inherited from his father. She knew Pavel's first wife was abusive and unfaithful but didn't care. She made sure to celebrate any other event during her son's birthday so that people wouldn't notice he's of age and can take his rightful throne. I actually have a video about her and Paul, if you are interested to hear more

A lot of people are saying Catherine was a bad mother because her son was taken away from her. Let's not forget that she got him back then he was 7. I also read her diaries and she spent more time discussing the jewellery she didn't receive for giving birth than talking about her son. She never loved Paul and that's the sad truth. At least Paul turned out to be a caring father.

Ouch, I didn't know that! I had just assumed it was because Catherine wasn't given enough time to bond with the baby. I read that when reminiscing about him after his assassination, his children remember their father playing with them and rolling around on the floor. I think it's kind of cute.

@@ВалерійМайборода-й3э no im not, Her greatest accomplishments include: establishing educational reform, championing the arts, and extending Russia’s borders in the largest territorial gain since Ivan the Terrible. Just because she supressed a cossack rebellion doesent mean she wasnt great, she did more for her country than most of the modern leaders, and calling someone ''Great'' is based on accomplishments for their countries, not if you like someone or not. So yes, she deserved the title great.

sounds like a narcissist. her daughter was scapegoat. her son was the golden child. she couldn’t handle it when her daughter was more popular than her.
