@@alehandro2x2 Actually no. Empress Anna Ioannovna ruled for 10 years as a single monarch, Queen Sofia ruled for 9 years prior to Peter, Empress Catherine 1st ruled for 3 years as a single monarch, Elizabeth, who ruled for 8 years I think and there was Catherine herself, who ruled for about 30 years, which would make 60 of the 200 years between 1600 and 1800 female-ruled which is actually amazing in comparison to Prussia, which never had a female ruler and places like Austria, who had only 1 who was prominent and whose succession resulted in an actual war.

Chernobyl's podcast actually explained why they did this. The three choices were speak Russian, speak with a Russian accent, or speak English with an American or British flair. Speaking Russian the whole time was thrown out because pretty much no actors speak it fluently and audiences hate subtitles. Speaking with Russian accents was thrown out too, as pulling off a good Russian accent is hard, and can easily shift to comedic, which is a bad combo for a large cast drama show. So, they just embrace speaking American or British English as their are plenty of actors who speak it well(duh), and they can easily use more foreign accents for one off foreign characters to show their foreign naturally (say rural Russian regions and foreign diplomats).

Caesar but noble families that surrounded royals were Russians. Poets, writers were Russian. To disregard that and say they were pretty much like Brits is stupid. Russian culture was there. This is why it was not easy for foreign princesses to adjust when they came to Russia from Germany

Because ALL royal families across Europe including russian empire were interconnected through marriages,hence they were mixing local cultural influences alot. And most foreigners have a very strange expectation when it comes to Russian portrayals. Russian empire did act and look like your average European empire, coz a) it was b) back in the day influences of certain countries were prevalent all across Europe, it was a result of fashion and as you would today call it trends. There was a period when France and Germany did shape the looks and ways of European royalty, which resulted in almost indistinguishable habits and customs amongst the upper classes all across the continent. Also there was a huge division between lower and upper classes, peasants and royalty literally everywhere, but especially in Europe where the upper classes developed a very specific international culture that was shared and understood by all of them when rurals of the respective countries had a completely different lifestyle that also varied much from country country and even region to region.
@nimkati5627

@@cr3160 All European nobility copied the French - it doesn't make them foreigners. Russian nobles had a strong Russian identity. It's wrong to assume that they didn't speak Russian. How do you imagine a ruling class that can't even read official documents and laws? Catherine herself mastered Russian to such an extent that she began writing books in it. Her correspondence with Russian nobles was mostly in Russian too. How do you think she learnt it if everybody around spoke other languages? And it's not true that Russian and British noble cultures were so similar. If you read literature of that period, you will see that the vibes were pretty different.

But did you know that the title Tsar is Bulgarian? "Tsar" and its variants were the official titles of the following states: First Bulgarian Empire, in 919-1018 (1st Tzar in history is Simeon I of Bulgaria) Second Bulgarian Empire, in 1185-1396 Serbian Empire, in 1346-1371 Tsardom of Russia, in 1547-1721 (replaced in 1721 by imperator, but still remaining in use, also officially in relation to several regions until 1917) Tsardom of Bulgaria, in 1908-1946 Also, the cyrillic alphabet was invented in the First Bulgarian Empire in the 890s at the Preslav Literary School and later in Ohrid, under Boris I of Bulgaria, and was created by Cyril's students who were banished from Great Moravia and given refuge in Bulgaria. The cyrillic alphabet is essentially just like the greek alphabet and the majority of uncial Cyrillic letters were identical to their Greek uncial counterparts.

With all due respect to Helen, she is too old an actress at 74 to play the role of Catherine. Somewhere in 47-50 years old she met Potemkin, who was 10 years younger than Catherine. PolarMaths from what I heard about the Spielberg project, it hasn't gone anywhere. Plus they would just CGI all of the battle scenes, and films typically have bad casting for Napoleon. Christian Clavier was by far the best Napoleon.
@TheHippoBLT
@TheHippoBLT 5 жыл бұрын
General Generic The reason why there is no news is because there is trouble finding a decent screenwriter that will tackle Kubrick’s legacy. They seemed to have finalized their decision recently. The complaint about CGI is just wrong and many people say that, but portraying using real people or an army is just ridiculously costly and expensive and time draining, Claver’s Napoleon was $46,000,000. I would pay a billion dollars to see the Battle of Eylau in CGI that is detailed and graphic. Most likely that is what going to happen. Either way even if they respect Kubrick’s wishes to rent an army to film the scenes and use paper uniforms, it will look hillariously bad and inaccurate which is worse than CGI. The battle scenes in Claver’s Napoleon were hillariously bad and inaccurate and are one of the worse depictions of a Napoleonic battle. Im sure they will find a good casting role for Napoleon because HBO is a bigger deal than the France 2 network Napoleon 2002 was produced on. Instead of doubting we should atleast put some faith into it. Im thankful we are getting a Napoleon HBO miniseries at all, and it seems another Napoleon miniseries is in the works in the UK.

Not saying there was no sexism in 17th century Russia, but I dont think people tought she couldn't rule because she was a woman, specially not after 30 years on the throne (maybe when she was very young).

She had a lot of lovers (men), and had also a lot of enemies that would like to see her downfall, so they also spread rumors to disparage her. I will admit in the end she had become a bit tyrannical, but she did a great many things for Russia and started out as a reformer there.

I wholeheartedly disagree, there are dozens and dozens of movies and shows that are exclusively young Catherine. Ekaterina was amazing, yet never focused on her being older. I fell in love as soon as the first trailer made it clear it will solely be older Catherine. Finally not just a pretty face and boobs, but actual character depth.
@Ruimas28
@Ruimas28 5 жыл бұрын
@@ladyfyreblood6550 You obviously do not understand the power of a young foreign teenager being awesome enough to play all russia against her husband and grab power. It does look WAY MORE IMPRESSIVE with her real age. And she had amazing character depth in her youth already. She arrived russia as a teenager and immediately proceeded to work like hell to impress. And nop, it was not sexy stuff. It was reading and learning all night long even to the point of risking her health. Which greatly impressed everyone around her and scared her future husband to death. He was not the brightest bulb but he could clearly see that girl was not joking around!!!! Yes, she also played a lot with guys and enjoyed sex once she got power but apparently we are going to get that with the older version…..which will look pretty odd by the way lol I understand older people still may like it but they for sure will not have the same lust someone in their late 20´s or early 30s lol Its just…..biology. And Catherine is reported to have been plenty active on her best years ;) It does call for a younger version to display her at the top of her energy, even more so because she was so incredibly energetic on her best years. You could pull this with someone more….quite.....but its very hard to play this with someone like Catherine.

Rui Silva Well of course I understand how impressive and amazing it was! Thats why she is one of my favorite historical figures ever! My point was that every show and movie STOPS before she gets old. They never film an old Catherine. She was just as awesome and cunning when she is old and did many important things as well! I am glad that they have her here as an older woman because nowhere else is it celebrated that an OLD woman can do the same as a YOUNG woman, especially if the young woman had to rely on her wits and beauty and now as her beauty fades she has to rely more and more on her smarts alone. THAT is impressive!
@Ruimas28
@Ruimas28 5 жыл бұрын
@@ladyfyreblood6550 You could have a point on showing how she matured and developed further. You got a bit delusional with the talks that older woman can do the same as a younger woman. NO!!! Neither can guys lol Age is a very real thing, like it or not. Fight it and be ready to be very miserable in life. You want to see some very practical example??? Catherine would have died if she tried to keep the same work ethic she had on her youth later on. She almost killed herself in her youth by studying and reading all night long. She would have died if she tried the same at an older age. Your body simply cant take as much. And I am the one here who keeps trying to talk about politics and studying as you keep trying to push this into looks. Do you really believe young Catherine achieved anything because of her looks???? Because there is nothing about that on any history book. Quite remarkably, she is not even described as being hot. She was much more concerned with politics, philosophy, science....then she was with the looks department.

Megatron Megatron Crimea became Russian in 1783 thanks to Catherine and remained Russian for 200 years. Crimea was in Russian possession during USSR times as well. That’s how conquest works in history. Somebody loses the war and territories are the spoils of war. Ottoman Empire lost the war. As for Tatars, Russians don’t mind them living in Crimea atm. But Tatars are not ingenious population of Crimea, they lived there since XIII c., but before them Crimea was a Greek/Byzantine land.
@anastasiazhdanova1578
@anastasiazhdanova1578 5 жыл бұрын
@@megatronmegatron976 Russian Empire was replaced by Soviet Union where the main Soviet Republic was Russia which continued to own Crimea. Crimea is very much a Russian land now, the majority of population there are ethnic Russians and Russian-speakers. Russian Federation is a legal successor of both Soviet Union and Russian Empire, so it has the right to own Crimea. The right of conquest. When Greeks created colonies the population of Crimea became Greek, with a large portion of Scytho-Cimmerians who lived there before. Crimean Tatars appeared in Crimea only in the 13th century with the Mongol Golden Horde. They are not and never were ingdigenous population, they simply were the conquerers too.

Megatron Megatron Russian Federation is an official successor of USSR and USSR was official state successor of Russian Empire. Thus Russian Federation is both successor of Russian Empire and USSR. Moreover after collapse of USSR Russia officially underlined to be successor of both Russian Empire and USSR and paid both Imperial and Soviet debts. Crimean Tatars have no real ethnogenesis in Crimea before 13th century since they were outsiders who simply settled on new land, and then some of them mixed with local population who had nothing to do with Tatars prior to that. Russia doesn’t recognize Ukraine’s jurisdiction over Crimea since 2014. So international law has no effect here. Ukraine also chickened out in 2014, abandoning Crimea, removing its troops from there. US or Europe also proved to be powerless in this matter.The majority of Russian-speakers in Crimea gives it direct right to make Crimea its own. Since other countries can do nothing about it and didn’t try to do anything about it Crimea is now Russian, again. And you buddy will have to live with that.

I just watched Catherine the great, two episodes. It was completely ABSURD: Mirren plays a 30-something-women. And calls the clearly middle aged man who plays Potemkin "young man". It is unwatchable. I dont even know what to say. The tone of someone in that age is totally different from someone in her 70s (or even 50s/60s), not to even mention the look. Sure Mirren is good looking but no one in their 70s look like they are in their 30s, 40s or even 50s. And Mirren/Catherine the great also sounds like she is a grandmother all the time. What were they thinking? Why did they not concentrate on Catherines last years or hired another actress for young Catherine.

Helen Mirren is a great actress, no doubt here! But, sorry, her Catherine's character and story are not authentic. The trailer shows the beginning of her relationship with Potemkin: Catherine was 45, Potemkin was 35. The 70 year old Helen playing a 45 year old Catherine is a bit of a stretch. Catherine was charming, poised, speaking softly, without shouting her 'absolute power'. Helen's Catherine is not nearly there. Also, why not to do filming at the beautiful locations in St Petersburg to make it at least a bit authentic?! Love Helen Mirren, but total cock-up with the story.
