This video was way cooler than it had any right being. Best "accidental" ebay purchase ever.
@willsvideo3 жыл бұрын
It’s funny, as a camera operator in film and TV, my literal first thought when I saw the one picture from the eBay listing was “Huh, I wonder if that’s from Tyler gyro mounts…” It’s truly amazing that someone left that tape in there, and your explanations of video assist and how film viewfinders work are plenty accurate. Even the last 35mm camera i shot on, an Arricam LT, with an HD video tap still had flicker as you roll the camera (although the flicker settles out to a general “dullness” as the camera comes up to speed, thanks to the video tap’s electronics doing some wizardry).
@johndododoe14113 жыл бұрын
Oh, my first guess was running the video assist at 24fps capturing one video frame between each 35mm frame, rather than getting a 6Hz beat frequency flicker from mixing 24fps mirror and 30fps video.

19:16 They probably spent days or even weeks setting up that shot, what with the location, the props, the time of day, the color of the ambient light, etc. They wanted to get the shot and didn't want to have to redo it, so he told the FX guy to hold on, landed and got the director to have a look. It's one of those shots you really wouldn't want to have to do multiple takes of.

Hey CRD! I'm a pilot, but I've also shot a little bit of air to air photography of aircraft from another aircraft (a Piper Cherokee Six with the aft door off) before, and it's definitely pretty cool. The camera work itself is a tiny part of doing stuff like this, and you have to understand what the pilots are capable of and what they want to avoid. I've learnt the hard way that the 'choreography' really matters in stuff like this and can make the difference between an epic shoot and one that can go horribly wrong. But how boring would life be if we didn't collect beautiful things, but things that once had a purpose. My fav find still is a synth from 1984 that still had the original owners program cart in it! Had over 100 custom sounds that had been dialed in by whatever artist used it before me and it was a trip going through them all. Great Vid, please keep it up! Question: will we be seeing any more streams with Toni? (i think thats their name, I'm terrible with names) Those PC mag streams were a ton of fun! Even just doing one alone with chat to see you go full nerd mode would be awesome! Hope all is well, stay health, stay safe, and don't ever change on us you hear?

I really enjoyed your directness in revealing your feelings to us on how you feel about salesmen in general. And sales women.

You're the only person who will probably relate to this.. I bought a Macintosh Plus off ebay that was battered and broken and no sign of life because I noticed a British university name on the side. It arrived and turned out to be a US import (the case is the one with the signatures) I found a doctors name on the side and googled him, turned out he wrote some medical text that helped in biochemistry and made him famous in that world, he happened to have written that book on my Mac. NO REGRETS! & yeah I got it working because it never suffered battery leakage. And like your story it would be the coolest thing I own but... I own a used valve from the WW2 Colossus computer and nothing can top that.

Whoa that is freakin' amazing that people were able to find out what the footage was for! And as always, thanks for producing yet again a truly informative and entertaining video, CRD. Please don't stop!

OMG I've been wanting one of these! I have a collection of Video 8 movie releases I've collected over the years but no way to play them. Next time I go down to my storage unit maybe I'll pull them out bring them home and put them on a shelf maybe that will further motivate me to get one of these. I don't have a lot, as I'd just pick them up every so often when I'd see them at a thrift store and I haven't seen any original release movies on video 8 at a thrift store in years. I think the last one I saw was at a salvation army in 2009 and it was watership sown, that animated rabbit one. Which I already had multiples of so I didn't buy it. For some reason that one is really easy to find. I have no idea why.

What I find interesting is that there is no overscan, the display is more like a computer monitor than a TV.

The geometry controls were probably adjusted when the 12V jack was added.

This is definitely one of the coolest things I've seen you present on this channel, as a huge film nerd myself and someone making my way into the industry after film school. I can't believe the radio audio was essentially recorded entirely by accident. Thanks for sharing!
@Nabeelco3 жыл бұрын
The Audio was almost definitely intentionally recorded. The interference in the video however was probably just that, interference.

Maybe recording the output from a walkie/radio to the tape, and the interference from the power supply is leaking in?

A video like this is priceless for history. Never let it go!
