The Mountain Dew story isn't gross when you're expecting to hear that you peed on it.

That diode make sense because the motor is DC type, with brushes and permanent magnets. The same you can see in hair dryers, a very (clever) japanese solution. Typically those motors are rated 30 to 50 dcV, that's why the resistor. RMS voltage of a half wave recrified is 1/2 V peak, so the resistor absorb the difference. The most electromech calcs used an induction motor with a flywheel, but those guys extrapolated the hair dryer's design to a calculator, clever. Another interesting solution is the printing mechanism itself, the type discs are fixed, and the paper pulling roll basculate, i.e. less moving parts.

I got an analog function generator that uses that same power cord and have been looking for the right power cord for years now.

I think I've seen power cords like that on sewing machines.

A single diode as a half-wave rectifier and the mother of all resistors behind it... that's got to be the dodgiest way I've seen to run a hobby motor! My advice would have been to solder a wire at the other end of that resistor and one after the motor (I think that one goes straight to the plug), then run it off a low.voltage, current limited DC bench power supply. If you can't read the markings on the motor, my first guess would be 6V/1A, and increasing in small increments from there. Unless otherwise stated I probably wouldn't let it draw more than 1A though.

@@CathodeRayDude Well shoot, I stand corrected, sorry about that. I'm looking forward to your feature length video, keep up the fantastic work! I wonder if it has anything to do with using rolls since you only tested it by manually feeding in a scrap, some sort of eject? Or some way to clear a jam?

i haven't run it any more yet bc i need to replace the ink ribbon and i can't find one.
@DacodaNelson3 жыл бұрын
@@CathodeRayDude In theory, you can use India ink to re-ink a ribbon a few times, just paint the appropriate side fairly lightly and then wait for it to dry. Usually. No guarantees but it's worked for me. I've also heard of using stamp-pad ink but I don't have experience with that. There's also nothing wrong with finding a similar material at a craft store and cutting it to the same dimensions, then soaking it in India ink, though you can get jams that way.
