Text From the Gospel & Homily ~ January 28, 2024
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, o Lord.
Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught there. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority not as the other scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the holy one of God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Quiet! Come out of him!" The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Interruptions. Few of us welcome interruptions. They are disruptions of the ordinary. The familiar. The comfortable. They cause anxiety. Let's consider today's gospel. It was the sabbath. And like all Jews whether from piety, habit or duty, on any given sabbath, Jews find themselves in the synagogue. In the midst of the ordinary. The familiar. The comfortable. But this sabbath is different. There's a guest preacher and every congregation loves to have a guest preacher, don't they? Something new. And here was this strange young man unknown from Nazareth. While all preachers deliver a message, Mark tells us that the congregation here was astonished they were mesmerized. They saw a certain authority. Quickly they began to realize that this preacher was not only delivering a message, he was the message. But then the unexpected happens. The service is interrupted. Jesus is interrupted by another stranger. The one possessed by an unclean spirit. This one steps forward and challenges the authority of this preacher. Only then to be silenced. Quiet! Jesus commands him. Quiet, and commands the unclean spirit come out of him. At that moment the stranger must have felt at peace. But the only one in that whole synagogue at peace for the others are looking, saying what is going on? They're startled, they're shocked, they're shaken, they're confused. “Who is this man?” they ask themselves. “Who is this preacher?” “Who is this man who was possessed by the unclean spirit?” “Who has interrupted our familiar?” Our lives are most often very ordinary. And very familiar. It makes us comfortable in our homes, in our rooms, in the midst of our families, our neighborhoods, in the midst of our friends. Even in the Mass that is so familiar, we live in this comfortable place. Here we can mind our own business. And let the world go on until an interruption happens. The unexpected visitor shows up and startles us. A shocking event in the world. Health crisis. Any other kind of difficulty. An unexpected word from a stranger. A kind word. Our familiar. The ordinary is interrupted. Let us hear Jesus. Quiet. Be still. We may hear his voice in the midst of that interruption. It is here that we may find Christ. It is here that we may find the peace.
