It's not often that you hear that gluttony can take the form of being a picky eater, not just over eating. I think its important that that point is made more often.

Yes, Dalton, glad you picked up on that and we agree. We would say that not all picky eaters are gluttons, but it can play into the equation. There is a member of our staff who can't stand avocados and is very picky when it comes to ordering foods that may contain avocados in any shape or form. Yet, we don't believe not liking avocados is sinful - he certainly doesn’t! But when a person is picky just to be picky - for instance, not wanting blue M&M’s in your bowl - then we can see where that behavior is an "immoderate preoccupation with food or drink" associated with gluttony. As Libby says "If we make food more important than it should be, it can end up ruining your life."

What is interesting to me is gluttony is not always manifested as simple obesity. Gluttony can manifest as some of these health food preoccupations & obsessions like going to a fanatic extreme to measure out types of nutrients, purchase only organics, or exclude &/or include types of specific ingredients... because all of these things can become idols. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. 🙏💙

Hi Averie. All sins can be forgiven, so long as you are truly sorry for them. Scripturally, it is said that there is only one "unforgivable sin" and that is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. There is a lot of talk about what that means and most scholars think it is your not being able to accept the fact that God can forgive you for your sins.

the guy is extremely well adjusted, at 3:10 when they start talking about anger (wrath) the girl you can see gets emotionally invested in the topic so she has been quite angry in her past and something or most likely someone before, possibly an ex boyfriend who cheated on her, i feel like she has used her faith to help understand her anger and knows that forgivness is the way to deal with it, but she also deep down doesnt forgive the person because she knows he doesnt deserve it, why should he? you would have given everything to that man and he treated you/used you the way he did to cheat on you for somebody that you know too probably. thats why i say you know that you should forgive but you totally havent done it yet, an you feel slightly ashamed at yourself which is why when the guy mentioned the next topic your head snapped to his attention immediately the first time you actually looked at him during the video. thats another thing, you know he is a handsome guy and in your mind the perfect man that you have been taught to consciously want, but simultaneously you feel not attracted to him at all. maybe this also scares/upsets you that you know your road to fulfilment in life will involve your heart being broken a few more times and this is what keeps you wary when getting into another relationship again, i think you are intelligent enough to know that black men are more likley going to cheat on you, yet you are still just holding out hope that you find that one good guy (who is black) and christian an loyal, an this whole religious stint is hoping god 'rewards' your good behaviour in the materialization of this man. and if he doesnt well you probably wont be a catholic in 10 years time. this is maybe what you have said to yourself. the guy like i said is very well adjusted, but i feel like his earlier years were more about faith than his later ones now, and he has grown from an innocent boy into something more serious/ mature/ coarse, maybe he views those earlier years as having a greater connection with god and the older he gets the less and less it is but his faith has molded him into the man he is today and without his childhood he would be a totally different person, however he isnt perfect, the quip about not commiting to a relationship at 4:20 probably an open secret amongst the cast and crew (probably all go to the same church together so know eachother) but he knows this and probably likes holding off on commitment to be in control not just of the relationship but the way other people view him with women still fauning over him even if they know they cant get him he still enjoys the attention and thinks this will maybe go away once he is wearing a ring, just to summise i would say that the guys life and his interactions end up becoming a business transaction and because of this superficial level we never really get the opportunity to see the real kai which is a shame because there is much more than meets the eye and maybe this will be a regret later on in life, regardless. this video has helped me to understand the 7 deadly sins more and my own shortcomings, thank you so much for the presentation!

Hi Mara Malvaroza, the Deadly Sins are hard to control and we often find ourselves falling into the same trap, time and time again. We have found that the sacrament of Reconciliation helps us as well as the remedies suggested in the episode. The most important thing is to try to do better, but not to be so hard on yourself when you get angry. It might also help to read up on what to do to manage anger.

Their is no list of deadly sins in the Bible and for sure not 7 of them. Someone massaged this list out of Proverbs and Acts and made this list between the 4th and 6th century and under the control of the Catholic church. It's better to call these the "6 not good things to do because they will make you unhappy but will not keep you from going to heaven." THANKS!!!!!

Luke, it’s really a matter of degree. The Church respects the informed conscience that each of us develops … emphasis on “informed,” of course. This greatly honors our dignity, and in so doing assumes in return that we will conduct our examinations of conscience with as much candor and clarity as we can muster. Deep down, we sinners usually somehow KNOW (don’t we?) when an infraction of one of the Seven Deadlies moves the needle from "oops" to "not really mortal” to “ew, maybe mortal" to “yikes!” In the of case of gluttony, for example, it's the difference between taking a cookie or two from the cookie-jar once in a while or scooping handfuls from the cookie-jar for weeks on end - what's called habitual sin, a practice that as Libby says in the episode "won't make you happy no matter how hard you try." Habitual over-indulgence is never a path to a happy place, health-wise or otherwise, and like all sin it afflicts a person whom God loves and wants to be happy - in this case yourself. A couple cookies, mortal sin? We don't think so. But when in doubt there's Confession, thank God! In the meantime, you might be interested in our episode "Formation of Conscience." And the episode on “Virtues” features some disciplines that help keep sin at a safe distance.

Yes, but remember, Luke, that’s only part of the equation. We can’t be truly sorry (“repentant") for those serious sins when we don’t personally understand why they are so sinful. Are they just items on somebody else’s checklist of violations? Or have we formed our conscience in such a way that we can feel in our hearts why that sin has wounded God, ourselves and others? By doing the necessary spiritual and psychological work, we can learn how to keep the less serious sin from becoming the serious one, and begin to take responsibility for the way we conduct our lives.

When we talk about "Pride" as it pertains to one of the Deadly Sins, we are not talking about being proud of who you are, or being proud of your children. Within reason, that is all fine. Pride becomes sinful when it is excessive, when it comes with the exclusion of honoring the fact that all that is good comes from God. Pride is considered sinful because it involves an excessive focus on oneself, often to the detriment of others and a denial of one's dependence on God.

There is a distinction between healthy pride and sinful pride. Through scripture and tradition, we learn that it is natural to feel satisfied when we do something big or important, we totally agree with that but pride becomes sinful when it causes you to be arrogant, boastful, or if you have a sense of superiority over others. On the other hand, humility recognizes that all talents and achievements are gifts from God. True pride, good pride, involves using your talents for the good of others and the greater good rather than for yourself or to belittle others. So, while acknowledging your talent’s and accomplishments, it is important to cultivate a spirit of humility and respect for the dignity of all people, recognizing their inherent worth as children of God.

When a person comes to Jesus Christ as a guilty sinner, under the condemnation of God (Romans 3:10,19), and places their faith solely in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of those sins (Galatians 3:26)--then ALL sins are forgiven forever, including future sins (Romans 8:1; Psalm 103:12). The Catholic teaching of mortal sins verses venial sins is unbiblical. All sin is mortal (James 2:10). When a man believes on Jesus Christ, then he obtains HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, i.e., Jesus' righteousness (2nd Corinthians 5:21; Romans 10:3,4). At salvation, Christ's righteousness is IMPUTED to us, and we are declared "justified" in God's eyes (JUST-IF-ID never sinned). A Christian CANNOT commit the unpardonable sin. Romans 8:1 states, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Only an unbeliever can commit the unpardonable sin, and many do. If a Christian commits suicide, they still go to Heaven. As true believers, we don't run to the priest (a sinful man himself) to forgive our sins. Folks, ONLY God can forgive sin (Mark 2:7; 1st Timothy 2:5). Please read, who can forgive sins Another misconception about the unpardonable sin is that God will not allow such a person to repent if they so desire. The Bible clearly states in Isaiah 1:18... "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." The Hebrew word for "crimson" is interesting. It refers to a worm used to make clothing dye. Thus, God is saying that although your life may seem permanently stained with sin, He can cleanse you as white as wool. This is the power of Jesus' precious blood that cleanses our sins away, "...and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1st John 1:7). As long as you are alive on this earth, it's never too late for a person to get saved. Some people believe that there are certain sins, which if a person commits, will cause God to seal their doom; thus, preventing them from ever being saved. This heresy goes totally contrary to the plainest teachings of the Scriptures. We read the precious Words in 2nd peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." Don't you tell me that if a man comes to God, realizing his guilt, and desires for the Savior to forgive his sins--that God will turn him away. Jesus plainly stated... "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." The phrase "All that the Father giveth me" simply refers to those who yield to the conviction of God's Holy Spirit, and thus come to Christ for salvation. No one is chosen for salvation. Jesus PROMISED that He would never cast out anyone who comes TO HIM for salvation. Now it is possible for a person to commit sin, and become hardened beyond the point of hope; but they have condemned themselves. God is still WILLING to save them, just as 2nd Peter 3:9 tells us. Titus 3:10,11 state, "A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself." There are many such fools today, who won't listen to reason. Won't God Send Strong Delusion to the Unsaved? Didn't God say that He would send strong delusion to unbelievers left behind at the Rapture? Not exactly, God said that He would send strong delusion to those who conscientiously REJECT THE TRUTH. 2nd Thessalonians 2:10:11 states, "And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie." Carefully notice the reason why God will send people strong delusion in the Tribulation Period... because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. They will have already made a conscientious decision to REJECT the Savior! It is those people whom God will harden.God never hardens anyone unless He knows in His foreknowledge that they are beyond hope, such as Pharaoh in Moses' time. Anybody who wants to come to Jesus Christ for forgiveness may... "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). No matter what sins you may have committed, if you have a sincere desire to repent by turning to Jesus Christ in faith, you can be saved. You are not beyond hope. The important thing is that you realize you're a GUILTY sinner, under the condemnation of Gods law (Romans 3:19), and then believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior for the forgiveness of those sins (Acts 4:10-12; 16:31; 20:21). God will forgive anybody, because Jesus died for everybody! 1st John 2:2 states, "And he [Jesus] is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." How much clearer could the Bible be on this matter? Whatever depths of sin you may have gone to, God is willing to forgive you, if you'll come by way of the blood of Jesus. The Unpardonable Sin is Rejecting Jesus Christ as Your Savior There is only one sin which CANNOT be forgiven--rejecting Jesus Christ as your Savior. In other words, none of your sins can be forgiven apart from the precious blood of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:22). God is willing to forgive a person of ANY sin, except the sin of not coming to God the Father through the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus stated in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." There is no salvation apart from God our Savior... "Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour" (Isaiah 43:10,11). Also, this Scripture clearly reveals the deity of Jesus, i.e., that He is Almighty God. For a tragic example of those who commit the unpardonable sin... meet the RATIONAL RESPONSE SQUA (RRS), a group of Atheists who have launched a website called The Blasphemy Challenge (which offers to send people a DVD if they post on KZbin.com a video of themselves condemning themselves to Hell). Says the website... "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." —John 3:16

Ironically, Ben, many years ago, the seminal Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas got in trouble with Church authorities for a virtue theory that looked an awful lot like Aristotle’s! Eventually, of course, Aquinas was exonerated, and his theology - now openly noted for its Aristotelian DNA - has become one of the staples of Catholic teaching. The end point of virtue (“telos”) for both Aristotle and Aquinas is “happiness.” But Aquinas says because of sin, that happiness is out of reach without God’s help to transform us or, as he put it, to “deify” us on the way. Moreover, happiness for Aquinas cannot be fully achieved in this life but only in the next, in “beatitude,” a supernatural union with God. So while his (and in general the Christian’s) theory of virtue indeed follows Aristotle’s steps, it is God who both empowers us on the journey and who glorifies us at journey’s end.

Natural Law is a set of universal, inherent, objective, non man made, eternal and immutable conditions which governs the consequence of behaviours of beings with the capacity for understanding the difference between harmful and non harmful behaviour. THEFT - Taking property which does not belong to you. 5. TRESSPASS - Taking security in anothers dwelling place which does not belong to you. 6. COERCIAN - taking anothers free will, which does not belong to you. 7. LYING - taking anothers abiliry to engage in informed decision making - which doesnt belong to you.

An interesting review of natural law, Wendy, which has been an integral part of our tradition since Thomas Aquinas proposed that it's "inscribed on the human soul," a concept that has its roots in both stoic and Aristotelian philosophy as well as in the Bible (pretty well covered by the ten commandments). Although natural law is not exactly the conversation we are having in this episode, obviously the deadly sins and moral norms are meaningfully related. While your list by no means exhausts the discernments that are necessary in considering a specific breach of natural law, it is a useful reminder that moral truth transcends human invention and social preference,
