The Seven Sorrows Rosary

This devotion to the Our Sorrowful Mother was originated in the thirteenth century, when seven professional men from Florence, which was an important commercial center of Europe, were influenced by the penitential spirit common to the Brothers of Penance with whom they were in close contact. In 1240 they withdrew from the world to pray and serve the Lord, leading a life of penance, prayer and service to Mary. Because of so many visitors, they retreated again to Monte Senario, where the Servites (Servants of Mary) was formed. By 1244, under the direction of St. Peter of Verona, they began to wear a religious habit similar to the Dominicans and began to live under the rule of Saint Augustine. The Servites devoted their prayer to the rosary of the Seven Sorrows. The choice of the number was derived from the symbolic value of he number seven, suggesting fullness, completeness, and abundance. Consequently only the principal sorrows are listed.[2]
The chaplet recalls the Sorrows the Virgin Mother of God endured in compassion for the suffering and death of her Divine Son. The Seven Dolors are taken from Scripture events and the devotion has a long history, and developed gradually. Before Pope Pius VII's formal approval, the Servite Order had permission in 1668 to celebrate the Feast of the Seven Dolors because the Order was instrumental in popularizing the Seven Sorrows Devotion. Members of the Servite Order actively promoted the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows during the time of the Black Death (1347-1351).

I have been doing the Seven Sorrows Rosary for a number of years now. It's a must (for me) to pray it after the regular Rosary (whenever possible, I try doing the 15 mysteries: The Joyful; The Sorrowful; and the Glorious Mysteries). I have received endless graces from it. We must pray for our family members; conversion of our friends and relatives. We must pray for the world daily. When we do, God's wrath is withheld from us (who deserve it very much because of our sinfulness; sense of entitlement; for placing our Lord as second in our lives). God must be placed first in our lives and by praying and following His Commandments we can be assured that it's quite pleasing to Him.

I have been praying the rosary daily with the soothing voice of this man whom I do not know. please could I know his name and something about him. I've always said the regular rosary or the divine mercy prayers. My first time saying a rosary like this. it was beautiful. being a mother I could in a way empathise with what our Mother Mary suffered, her grief at seeing her beloved Son suffer the way He did. I love this version of The Seven Sorrows, altho I would like to ask: How does this version differ from others and why? When was this Rosary instituted? Also: on one of the options of this version, it indicates subtitles. Is there a version with it included. I have a friend who would recite this rosary, but doesn't know the Hail Mary by heart. Thank you for this lovely Seven Sorrows rosary version. The most beautiful paintings helped me feel the sadness and suffering that our Blessed Mother went thru. One other ques. please - Are there ten Hail Mary's on each decade? It didn't seem such.

Thanks Jimmy for your comment, I honestly never even heard of the Seven Joys and I will get onto it as soon as I can. If it will bring a smile to Our Queen I will do whatever it takes. It might take a couple of weeks because I will do it on my summer break from work. Be assured Our Queen will smile on both of us when its done.

Hi Colette I'm glad you liked the idea of the Lullaby Rosary I watched my Mother slowly disintegrate through Dementia and die, but through it all even when I prayed the Rosary at her bedside I knew it brought her peace even though she did not know who I was. Indeed other patients would just stand in the room as I prayed but were unable to join in but they went silent as I prayed. It was not my idea at all, a lady from the US contacted me saying she was so stressed and anxious she could neither pray or sleep and would I do a Rosary with all the words so she could just listen. I then remembered my mum and a friend who uses my Rosary to get their baby to sleep because the rhythm of the prayers the say "knocks" the baby out. I look forward to the day I actually have an original idea it will be an experience.

This is beautiful visually & meditatively, am so sorry to not pray it, for the prayers are too fast! It is faster than the one who prays the first part. Feels offensive too pray to our God. After all He didn't die so fast. He deserves prayers that are not like a race or a freight train running thru. Mean no disrespect, like I do feel towards God & Blessed Mary when racing thru prayers.
