I too am confused, it is a place of cleansing of purging sin, cleansing by flames. Whatever you may believe about it, I fear it will be harsh and I believe the vast majority of Catholics will visit there and I truly believe saying the rosary daily and praying for the souls in Purgatory will shorten your stay.

I have a question. What did you mean purgatory is like new jersy....is it a city?...brick and motor? I'm not a catholic but have friends who are. Their was paradise before purgatory...Abrahams bosom. I think paradise became purgatory after Jesus cleaned it out after his crusifiction. Mainline Christianity disclaims the existence of purgatory. I would not have even entered into this discussion but one time in a dream I was allowed to talk to John Lennon he was not in heaven but was in a city. Souls in Purgatory are called Holy souls because they are no longer capable of sin and though they suffer "internally" they are under Gods care. People in Purgatory are typically glad to be there and are eager to suffer so they can be purified and reunite with God. The greatest pain they suffer is the separation from God. For the past 2-years I have dedicated 55 minutes a day to praying; Chaplet of St. Gertrude rosary, standard rosary, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet rosary. This is not to boast but encourage others to do the same. I disagree with Fr Benedict's explanation that people in Purgatory can pray for the living.That is incorrect.People in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves but they need our prayers for them to get to Heaven.Once you die you are helpless even to pray especially in Purgatory or hell.I know it because I have been there.

+jane a sinner Hi Jane,I was taken to Purgatory and also had a glimpse of Hell and Heaven.I have a duty daily to pray for all who die especially those in Purgatory after my experience there.Souls in Purgatory are sort of stuck between Heaven and Hell.It is like being stuck in a spiders cobweb and being helpless but the good thing about being there is that everybody there have only one way to go and that is up to Heaven.I saw souls being released from Purgatory and ascending upwards to heaven by the intercessory prayers of the living echoing from earth.The one prayer that stands out to my mind is the Rosary.I actually saw people there that had died earlier that I knew,so I had to tell their loved ones to pray for them.Prayers would come up from Earth for a soul and it would be released to proceed to Heaven.I saw a lot stuck there without people praying for them so it is my duty to pray for these unknown souls.People in Purgatory are 'not dead',only your soul is separated from the body during death.Your consciousness and feelings are still there minus the body.The overwhelming feeling about being in Purgatory is the sense of helplessness and total dependence on the prayers of the living to get you through.But the good news is that we have the BLOOD of Jesus which cleanses all our unrighteousness and by His name we can declared salvation over any sinner because it says in Philippians 2:10 "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth" My experience is a long one but basically this is basis of my trip to Purgatory.I will definitely pray for you Jane because this is my daily duty until my last breath.

Nuzha If you are in Hell prayer is futile,the souls in purgatory can pray for us their time to merit is finished for themselves that is why our prayer is required. The Holy souls are guaranteed the beatific vision at some point in time. That is church teaching

barry mcgrath I have nothing against the church teaching but I had a personal experience because I was taken there. Firstly, Church teaching was written by man and sometimes they get it wrong.Peter being the head of the church got it wrong against Jesus before going to Calvary and Jesus confronted him not as Peter but "Satan get behind me..."So if Peter,the number one Jesus follower, living with Jesus for a more than 3 years got it wrong,imagine those who wrote the church teachings years after Jesus and Peter were gone. Secondly,if you get to read or listen to near death experiences,they all say what I saw,that after you die,body and soul separates.You can see your body but your words are useless.Now on occasions,people come back because someone living is begging God that they come back or they are told by God to return to earth.I saw hell and heard heaven during my vision but my journey was to Purgatory.Three things stuck to me on that vision about Purgatory:1)Souls there are heavenbound,meaning they will not go to Hell,they are heading only one way,that is to heaven,2)Souls there are trapped,helpless,waiting,voiceless meaning they cannot help themselves,they cannot pray for themselves (let alone pray for the living),3)the good news is they can be helped from Earth by our prayers.I saw earthly prayers raising like incense from the earth and when a soul was prayed for,it was released to Heaven.I saw a lot of souls that no one was praying for stuck there,that's my duty everyday to pray for them.Provided the stats say that 70,000 people die each day,I am not surprised someone needs prayer.The one prayer I saw that released a lot of souls was the Rosary. Now when you see what I am sharing with the fact that it says in the Bible that before Jesus died he was calling out to the Father,"why have you abandoned me" and that He "descended into Hades/Hell" then rose from the dead,then I think someone did pray for Him while he was gone,most probably the Father. In a nutshell,what Jesus said on the cross before he died is the feeling of being in Purgatory "My God,My God,why have you abandoned me".The Good News is there is help from the living and though it fells like you are abandoned,there is help.So we need to pray for them. Lastly I leave you with this passage from Isaiah 38/18-19: "For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness. “It is the living who give thanks to You, as I do today..."
