As a figure skating fan who's never skated but really loves watching pairs, this video was so cool learning how it actually works, and learning the names of some of the basic elements that underpin the whole discipline. Thank you for making this video.

This is SO cool!! It’s amazing that you were both able to find someone in a similar situation to try this all out with! Personally, I’d love to see the practice vlogs and ice dance focus - it was so fun to get to see you both go from confident separately to pretty confident together! (And girl I feel you - you’re so brave LOL even skating like six feet away from someone else feels scary af to me so mad props to you😭😂)

Pairs always seemed so magical to me, but i always thought it's only for the athletes who started skating even before being able to run. Watching you perform pair skating, has made my mind change. It is still magical and so beautiful to see non pro athletes skating together. I wish i can participate in pairs someday😢😢😢 There is just no male non athlete skater who wants to try pairs in my country😭😭😭

Yes!! It doesn’t happen often but never say never! I never thought I could do it either until I tried and I supposed I got lucky that I happened to meet someone by chance at rink. Hoping that you can also meet someone one day and you can give it a go! Keep me updated!

The fact that I know the people in this video makes it even more fun! I wanted to be a pairs skater when I started but…🤷🏽♀️. This was great! You’re so trusting and fearless. Ice dancing first would have made stroking together easier because you really don’t have a choice 😃. Can’t wait to see what’s next!!!

I so miss skating! I’m 76 and have been off the ice for about 10 years now’s. My granddaughter wanted to go skating and felt like I never put skates on. For the first time I was scared of falling. Couldn’t stop either. I wish I never stopped! Love your videos.

Hi Cathy! This has inspired me to try convincing my partner to ice dance with me (pairs is a bit too much for us). He’s a beginner adult skater too and it looks like a great way to improve my own moves. I also skate at the same rink and saw you training - it looked so awesome and hard! Thanks for documenting your hard work for us to experience.

I literally began learning pairs myself less than a month ago. My partner has 20 years experience so we were trying basically all the things, including group 3 lifts like the bench press and platter (with 3 off-ice sessions and 2 on we haven't done them on ice yet). Did you attempt a death drop? Didn't see that in the video.
@cathydingg10 ай бұрын
Congrats that’s so amazing to hear more people trying pairs!! Keep me updated on how your journey goes! Unfortunately we ran out of time and didn’t get a chance to learn the death spiral but hopefully that’s something we get to learn and try in the future! (:

I always debate switching to pairs but I’m so not coordinated enough for this 😅
@cathydingg10 ай бұрын
I’m sure you are!! Never say never- if you want to give it go, you should try! Coordination is also something that can be practiced! When I first started skating I definitely wouldn’t say I was the most coordinated person by any means haha
@dianalynnelizabeth7803 ай бұрын
My pairs partner once almost dropped me on my head during an off ice press lift. He then claimed it was my fault because I was too fat. I retorted back to him that the problem was that I was just actually stronger and had more muscle mass than him. so I challenged him and told him we would do a beginner press lift and see if I could lift and hold him up for a minute and half. I did it with no problem and he was so embarrassed. Then I turned and looked at my coach and said “ummm, I just dumped him as my partner. Let me go back to my singles for right now. There is a good session I’m missing out on right now.” She laughed her ass off and just nodded her head “yes” she was laughing so hard that I showed him up in strength she couldn’t even talk she was crying she was laughing so hard. She couldn’t even make eye contact with him or his coach. I was 5’1” when I was in the prime of my career and I was 115lbs soaking wet but was all solid muscle. I only grew to 5’2” sadly lol. That’s where my “growth spurt” stopped. So it was more like a growth spit. lol I loved ice dance also however, when I was at the peak of my competitive career, good male Ice dancers were very hard to come across. The good ones got scooped up so fast. Same with the best males for pairs.

was strength/weight taken into account before you guys paired up?
@cathydingg11 ай бұрын
Hi there! That's a great question! One thing we both did that I didn't show in this video was we actually did a lot of core training together. I think core is super important for good balance in skating and just ensuring that you don't get any injuries especially in your back. I think in pairs, there's a lot of moves that are a bit more acrobatic like lifts which really does require a strong core. The other thing we noticed was that likely if we want to continue to do lifts, both parties would need to do more upper body strength training especially the shoulders. Typically singles skaters don't workout their upper body as much as it is usually not as necessary but upper body strength is actually quite important for both the male and female skater to be able to execute difficult lifts!
