He was. He faithfully genuinely loved Catherine, in spite of knowing his wife lusted after another. Catherine didn’t deserve Edgar.

in the book linton marries cathy on heathcliffs orders in order for him to possess trushcrass grove, linton is a sickly boy and dies, shortly after heathcliff slowly becomes manic and doesnt eat, he dies, in the end cathy and hereton marry on christmas eve, and heathcliff is buried next to catherine.

The deal is, every character in Wuthering Heights is never able to rise above their own selfishness. Even Nelly (Ellen Dean), our narrator is flawed and speaking from a skewed perspective. Throughout the book, all of them show different forms of love at different points, but none of them have the empathy necessary to be more than their inherent selfishness and revengeful natures. The only silver lining is from Hareton and Cathy the younger who are able to overcome their obstacles and find peace.

edgar called the daughter cathy and the mother catherine (because heathcliff called the mother cathy) especially in the beggining when heathcliff calls out to the ghost of catherine after lockwood claimed he saw it, he says cathy.

Having Juliette Binoche play both Catherines was a mistake - especially considering that she's not convincing as a Yorkshire lass - she's a good actress but I think she was miscast. Still, this is an interesting version - I always like Hareton in every version I see.

@mamuzo1 She is dead. Heathcliff is dictating a letter to Linton so he can send it to the younger Catherine (the daughter) as if it was Linton who wrote it as bait to get her to return to Wuthering Heights. But as he speaks it aloud he somewhat means it as if it was meant for Cathy (the mom).

@saphire ty Heathcliff is dictating the letter for it to be from Linton. Cathy is dead. Catherine, Cathy's daughter, is the one who received the letter.

@bocatsmom After the death of Cathy, she found out that she was pregnant and left Heathcliffe. Isabella spent the rest of her life hiding in London with some contact from Edgar. She dies in hiding hoping that Heathcliffe does not find Linton

I think this is intentional! He is meant to be a second generation prototype of Heathcliff. But, unlike Heathcliff, Hareton does end up with his true love (as it should have happened between the first Catherine and Heathcliff)

Exactly, I hate how they introduced the second Catherine because they didn't even tell us who she is they just painted the actresses hair blonde and put her in a scene where Heatcliff of all people sees her ... Then he brings her to Wuthering Heights and introduces her to a new character and calls him Linton withouth explaining who he is, why he's here and what happened to his mother after she left Heathcliff and I hate how they made second Cathy get introduced to Heathcliff first instead of Hareton and Linton beforehand. I don't recall but I don't even think they adresses Isabella running away from Heathcliff and having a son in London (Linton) and that, plus the fact Catherine's actress has a accent and the blonde color doesn't suit her, is what pulls me out of the story and this is why I preffer other versions of Wuthering Heights to this one

@hoodge95 I understand, but those reasons you mentioned did happen, in the book but not with Cathy, with Hareton, Heathcliff saw Catherine in his eyes, but maybe in the movie it was easier to understand if it was the daughter who looked so much like Cathy. Still, Juliette Binoche does not look like a teenager. As Cathy should. Does that make sense?

I agree, he is very victimized. He didn't ask for any of this and I honestly feel sorry for the guy. But that's not the point of the book or movie. He's merely only a tool that's used to further build and elaborate on the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff.

I think in the book says, she looked more like her father with her blonde hair, except for her eyes and her nose, those were her mother's. Hareton on the other hand, it is suppoused to like a bit like Catherine.

I think it was Isabella who named him. I think she ran away from Heathcliff while she was pregnant with her son, and the child was born in London. So Heathcliff had no say in the matter

I love this movie, but I still think it's stupid Juliette Binoche played both characters. Adding to the fact, Heathcliff should have at LEAST a few streaks of gray in his hair. He'd be hot anyway...

Reading the book I thought in a way the story repeated itself with Hareton, Linton and Cathy, as it was with Heathcliff, Edgard and Catherine, only with a different and happier end. Hareton in a way was Cathy's "Heathcliff" and Cathy wound up loving him instead of Linton, in spite of his brute and uneducated manners. They both (Cathy and Hareton) had flaws but they were redeemable and in the end their good nature prevailed, which wasn't the case for the first generation (Heathcliff and Catherine) whose evil traits made their love for each other so destructive and wicked.

Isn't that just brilliant, So passionate and obsessive. It's my second favorite scene in the film; my favorite is the cursing scene after Cathy's death. Both send chills down my spine.
