I was one of the animators that worked on this film. We were so excited for it to come out... it was looking so good! The animation was done by Turner Feature animation. During the creation of this film, Warner Bros. bought out Turner Networks and suddenly had this film land in their lap. WB totally dropped the ball concerning the marketing of this film. They did virtually nothing so no one knew about it, let alone had any desire to go see it. They did have a promotional tie-in with Subway and a few cheap happy meal type toys were made for it. But they just let it die. It was devastating When we went to the cast and crew screening, the first thing that came up was the WB logo, as if it had anything to do with the creation of the film. It was a slap in our faces especially after how poorly they marketed it. And THAT is the reason if bombed at the box office... no one knew about it. It was never given a fair chance to sink or swim on it's own merits.

I actually had to check the IMDb page for the film to verify your claims as one of the animators (sorry, nothing personal--the internet has made me skeptical and kind of paranoid to where I need to verify these things), and I did find your page...holy shit, you worked on The Road to El Dorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron, Quest for Camelot, AND The Iron Giant, too?! I think it's safe to say you shaped a lot of our childhood nostalgia!

One thing that always impresses me is that Darla's voice actress was _twelve years old_ Not only was her voice acting good but her _singing_ in Big and Loud was fantastic.

@iriswings369
@iriswings369 7 жыл бұрын
@Cartoon Critic I'm not convinced Watership Down was intended for children--the book isn't. I think the problem was that it was released during a time when animation was automatically assumed to be for children or families. I would give it a PG-13 for gore alone, but that wasn't a thing at the time, of course.

This is a fantastic movie that was unfairly squashed out of the theaters by both Disney and Warner Bros, even though Warners distributed it. It got almost no advertising and ran for a week where I lived. I am so glad to have caught it then. Beautiful full animation, fun music and terrific characters. Max on the big screen is amazing. CG is an amazing art form in its own right (hell, THREE of my favorite movies are The Lion King, Monsters, Inc., and Beauty and the Beast, so that should tell you something about my appreciate for both forms of animation), but hand-drawn will always have a special place in my heart. Right next to stop-motion :)

The little girl villain in this reminds me of an episode of, I think it was either Batman TAS or Batman Beyond, where a child star that has a rare condition that keeps her trapped in a kids body kidnaps her co-stars or something like that. Or might not even be Batman, might be something else. I'm sure someone in the comments will know.

I've always found the parts where Darla tries to keep her Shirley Temple-ish "sugary sweet little darling" act up really funny, especially the one where Danny takes too long to respond and she looks ready to explode before he finally spits it out then she goes right back to restrained fake smiles again. Max of course despite being played as all brutish and scary i still laugh, especially that booming voice and the thing where only his mouth moves while no other parts of his body does. That one part where he's dancing along to the animal's singing before Darla catches him in the act is so funny as well. What a hilarious and criminally underrated movie. Other tidbits: Frances was played by actress Betty Lou Gerson, who was the original voice of Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians and this was one of her last roles before her death about two years later. Tilly was Kathy Najimy, the one and only voice of Peggy Hill on King of the Hill and witch Mary Sanderson in Hocus Pocus. Sawyer's voice was done by Jasmine Guy, who played Whitley on Cosby Show spinoff "A Different World" and rose to the primary character following Lisa Bonet's abrupt departure from the series after the first season. Mark Dindal, the director of this film and Max's voice later joined with Disney a while after and took over production/reworked what soon became "The Emperor's New Groove" after it's early stages in development as "Kingdom of the Sun" under Roger Allers went south and was on the verge of being wholesale scrapped.

Because many adults frown upon 2-D animated films now whereas 3-D tends to get more grownups to watch it. Not only because 2-D films are more expensive, time-consuming, etc. but if you're making something, then you want as many people to see (and presumably enjoy) it as possible. If a noteworthy portion of your viewership would rather watch the film when it's 3-D animated, then that's another reason not to go 2-D. I love 2-D animated flicks a ton, but Princess and the Frog showed they're not as popular as 3-D films now and I don't blame animation studios for not wanting to get walked all over. Dragon's Lair will probably be good though since Don Bluth is doing it *(crosses fingers)*

People watch shows and websites from all other the world and if many are rendered unable to operate it's not just the American's they'll piss off. I'm already pissed off by how much congress feel they can control a system that is in essence international. Also they massively underestimate just how smart people are. If this law passes I give it 6 minutes until someone has found a work around and made it freely available online. You want the entire internet to do dark this poorly conceived mess of a decision is how you do it. The reason they are doing it is also transparent as anything. Companies are loosing money to independent producers so instead of embracing the competition and bettering themselves they'd rather just lobby the government to shut down opposition. It's pathetic.

I love this movie. Darla is freaking hilarious and so is Max. The pacing, comedy and animation are really lovely. I'm surprised NC didn't mention this film was one of Gene Kelly's last projects before he passed. He choreographed the animated dance numbers (which were one of the best features of the film, although there were only a few). Having one of the most classic actors of all time involved in a 1930s tribute film, which isn't widely known or celebrated, kind of a shame. But it makes this movie all the more special to me!

1930s cartoons even had their own Shirley Temple mimic, at least in La La Land, Bereniece (sic) Hanselle, who played many little girls for MGM, Disney, Warner Bros./Harman-Ising/Leon Schlesinger/Vitaphoine, and Universal/Walter Lantz, though strangely, as historian Keith Scott has said, not at Columbia/Charles Mintz (the asshole who cheated Disney out of Oswald the rabbit). She can be heard as ALL of the hen in the 1936 Warner Bros. Bing Crosby roast-toon "Let it be Me" as the hens, including hero Emily (Prissy in Foghorn shorts was based off of her), crushing on Bing Crsoby (who sued. Strangely, he and its director Friz Freleng teamed up in 1970 on DePatie-Freleng's first TV special/prime time foray, "Goldilocks"). Berniece actually SOUNDED just like Shirley Temple but was a grown woman!

Considering literally every human character in this movie is white, I think even in the backgrounds and that the lead was originally going to be an African American with this being a period piece about a time where pretty much everything was white washed, I think the lesson about prejudice is 100% valid and probably even on purpose.

I'm just glad to see a race-conflict that isn't telling the "privileged" ones to evicerate themselves for having prejudices that anyone would struggle with (aversion to strangers and culture shock), or telling them that they should feel ashamed of their success even if they aren't bringing anyone down. The message is "give 'em a chance, you might like them once you het to know them." Then there's the opposite thing where the minority faces the bigotry of low expectations and gets praised for mediocrity, eg, tennis player throwing temper tantrums and performing poorly along with the commentary surrounding the incident.

1000% this was inspired by the lack of equal rights for black performers in Hollywood back in the golden age of studios. People think it’s a film about talking animals, it’s actually about civil rights.

Can you PLEASE review Felidae now? It's a German-based animated movie about a cat detective who is trying to solve a series of murders while being plagued by horrifying nightmares. It's known as one of the goriest animated movies ever made (even dwarfing the likes of Watership Down) and I'd love to see your reaction to it.

The moments that basically engraved themselves in my memory were the lamp scene, which was the first time where I cried waterfalls while watching a movie (Inside Out was the second time), and the musical finale, which still is one of the best movie climaxes of all time in my opinion.

*+No Regerts* and *Kaija Schmauss* Fun fact: Spongebob creator Stephen Hillenburg originally never wanted to do a film even after over a year of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon's requests, following the show's success. This is both because: A) Intimidation from at-the-time increasingly popular animation gems like Toy Story or The Iron Giant. And B) He was skeptical that the show's formula could work in a feature-length format. Quoted: *"I didn't think that what we wanted to say needed to be in a movie. I like the short form for animation. Then this story idea came up that lent itself to a longer format. You can't do a road trip adventure in a short form."* Once the script developed a "hero's quest" premise to better justify the run-time and open up new creative doors with the characters on land, Hillenburg accepted. As most know by now, he intended it to end the series: *"There was concern when we did the movie that the show had peaked, among executives at Nickelodeon."* Thus, he resigned as showrunner & head-writer but returned as Executive Producer & creative consultant for the 2nd film. This was mostly in memory of his mentor Jules Engel though, not desire to continue the series. He's remained Exec. Producer since '08, still reviewing new episodes & suggestions, but is otherwise retired from the franchise. For fans who've lost love for the series, Hillenburg would support that the first film can be considered the true final episode. All post- '04 material would simply take place before its events, which is why they are never mentioned. 🍍 *#OceanMan* 🌊

Wouldn't it affect porn though? I mean if they are doing it with netflix why not porn? There is just as much money there. Do you honestly not think they are going to force sites like Pornhub to pay a stupidly amount of money for better access simply because they can? Have you ever heard of a major american company who wouldn't feed children to sharks for enough money if the publicity wasn't too bad?

You can see the impact of porn by the incidence between China and japan: Japan is the biggest producer of fringe-porn. China had a dispute with japan over an island. What did Japan do? they stop the porn-export to China - and it worked. Albeit when the ban was lifted the servers crashed cause too many wanted to watch some tentacles.

I nannied last summer and I told the kids about it and they wanted to see it so I showed them the movie and they absolutely adored it! No joke, last summer when I watched the kids they were all about Frozen but this summer when I watched them again they couldn't stand Frozen, absolutely hated it, but they still loved the movies I grew up with that they asked me to show them the previous summer. They even asked me to bring more movies that I grew up with.
