There is no plot to Cats because it was based on a series of poems about cats that Andrew Lloyd Weber set to music. Once he decided to make it into a musical, he added the VERY thin plot about one of the cats being chosen to go to heaven. That is the entire plot of Cats.

Get it?

I also grew up on musical theater, been in the cast of several musicals, as well as sang many of the songs from various musicals in general choir, show choir, and as solos. But please again assume that I am "not a true theater lover". Not to be hostile, but that is kind of a rude assessment just because I didn't spell out the entire plot of Cats act by act but rather gave the Cliff Notes version, because, like it or not, it was still indeed based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot.

Yes, there is a plot, but if people go into it expecting an epic, sweeping plot like Phantom, they will walk away confused. But go into it with an open mind and with the knowledge that the dance numbers and songs are amazing, then they will throughly enjoy the whole, visual experience.

The musical has no plot. It kinda surprised me not knowing what to expect when I saw it. Cats is based on a collection of poems by TS Elliot. What sells the musical are the songs and mostly the choreography which is great. There is some tiny thread that connects them together, but not much else. This was what worried me the most about this movie. I just don't see why Hollywood would adapt a musical without plot.

For someone who's never seen the musical before this, you have the name pronunciations and song tunes spot on! The problem with this movie is it took TOO much from the musical. Jennyanydots zipping out of her fur happens in the musical, but it works because it's on STAGE. I personally loved Skimbleshanks's tap boots, but again, only works on stage. If you're filming a world where a "cat" can bounce around with a human-sized bra, then you need to explain where Skimble got his cat-sized tap boots from.

Yeah, I have weird feelings about Cats as a musical, because I get that it's sort of trashy, but I do like it in a "guilty pleasure" sort of way. I think it works BEST as a stage musical though, because of the inherent suspension of disbelief in a stage show, so it doesn't feel like you're obligated to make the cats look exactly like cats when they're obviously human actors. Also, the make-up definitely makes the people look more like cats then the movie's idea of basically just "put the people's faces on the cat-ish bodies, but colour them differently."

Clothing can work in the film, they were just too inconsistent . Jenyanydots (musical) fur looked like clothing, the movie cgi does not so it just highlights that they are naked when they change. Movie Buster jones and macavity had the sane problem
