I started meowing back to my cat, and little by little we got a different meow for many things. We even have a meow sound to call each other, which we use when one can't find the other. What started s a joke ended as a full on conversation.

I had a talkative cat. He would meow in response to anything said in his general direction, at the sound of his name, and even when just looked at. He would also sometimes come over and meow at me. He was very cute and we had some great conversations [he had strong political views], but you can imagine how tiring it could sometimes be

I speak cat and unfortunately most of what they were asking for was definitely on deaf ears. These were videos of people thinking they look cool talking to their cat and simply guessing. Every single cat asked for something very reasonable and got shut down with some stupid comment

I love how the owners are so intune to their cats. A lot like babies. Once you figure out the gutteral sounds, screams and eye contact, you get what they want.

We've got three. The eldest is very quiet... and dumb as a box of rocks. The middle one is smart, but insane - all she does is yell at you. Or the ceiling. Or the other cats. Or the corner, or whatever... There is no other "word" she uses but HEYYY!!!! The youngest, however, is very smart, and actually uses language to a surprising degree (for a cat). He says "no" fairly clearly and in context, "yes" a bit more garbled but consistently, and when his vocalization parts can't make the English words, he makes up his own that we've come to understand. Beyond emoting, he's got a vocabulary of about 7 nouns, 4 or so distinct verbs (not counting the implied ones; i.e. "food" can be interpreted as "food item" or "feed me", depending on context), and I know damn well he *understands* a hell of a lot more human speech than he can speak. Pretty impressive for a little 15lb guy with a brain the size of a plumb. :-)

Cats are a lovable combination of smart and dumb. My cat Milo was very smart in a lot of ways but I always thought the weather was different depending on which door he went to... He would go to the back door and yell. I would open it.. He'd see that the yard was covered in new snow. He'd unconsciously pick up one paw and shake it in disgust and refuse to go out.... But then he would run through the house to front door and insist that I open it... He'd look out and, of course, the front yard was all nasty and snowy too. So he'd refuse to go out but always took the time to look at me and yell as if the weather was my fault. [I miss that old beast.]

Some are smarter than others, but a lot of cats understand a lot of human speech - more than most give them credit for. My youngest "talks" in a coherent and interactive way, although to anyone not in our family it's kind of like watching Han talking to Chewbacca.
