Completely agree that more pro-conservation documentaries and videos should educate people about what things people can do to help the environment, and not just leave things on a downer ending so that it can encourage people to be proactive. Another thing that is important is talking about what people can do even if they aren't millionaires or CEOs of some major corporations (while it is true that a lot of messed-up environmental problems come from rich people not putting in as much of their part to help, it doesn't mean people should give up on their own actions helping the ecosystems).

let's not individualize systemic issues here. if some company decides to adopt environmental practices, the competition surely won't (as long as they profit more from it). people don't like to address the C words though.

The jaguarundi is all the sass in a tiny package. Their roar is bloodcurling and does not fear people. I've encountered a couple while camping. The first time I was sh*ing my pants because it roared in my head outside my tent. Super funny now but then, it was horrible 😂😂😂
@Annie_Annie__
@Annie_Annie__ Жыл бұрын
I used to live in an area where there were jaguarundi. I never heard one roar, but my cat used to get SO angry when he saw one in our yard. I always knew when one was in the yard because it was always around dawn or dusk and my cat would throw himself at the windows hissing and spitting. He never believed me that the jaguarundi could lay him flat if it came to a fight. He was a big cat, but the jaguarundi were bigger, with a _lot_ more muscle. A lot of my neighbors would claim that they were “black panthers”. When I pointed out how small they were, they said they were “baby black panthers”, lol. I tried to tell them that they’re called jaguarundi, but they were adamant that they were “black panthers” (and that black panthers are different from black jaguars). Those same neighbors were also convinced that someone one town over caught a chupacabra. It was a coyote with severe mange that a farmer shot, but so many people were sure it was a chupacabra. 🙄

The conservation gatekeeping part instantly made me think back to Smokey the Bear with no context besides "Only you can prevent forest fires" and virtually nothing else. Also, seeing these cats reminds me of an old meme; "If this creature can kill me, why is it friend shaped? LOOK AT THE EARS"

@grimreminder5038

@@TheLithp No, you prevent the fire by stopping it while it's in your control. Making a barrier around the fire so it doesn't spread, making a fire on bare ground free of foliage or rotting plant debris, keeping an eye on it or putting it out before going to bed since certain animals like rhinos have learned to stomp out fires they see. Things I don't think Smokey went to in depth with that I can remember.

Oregonian here. I remember the debate about reintroducing wolves to ranchlands in the eastern part of the state. The ranchers weren't anti-wolf, they were anti-grey wolf reintroduction. The extinct Oregon wolf was a red wolf, and those wolves ate a diet closer to coyotes. The grey wolf has a large prey diet.
@clarisaxpianist
@clarisaxpianist Жыл бұрын
That's a similar issue being faced in Yellowstone - the reintroduced grey wolves are thought to be larger and more aggressive hunters than the grey wolves originally in the area. I want to say that the wolves are still benefiting the ecosystem though, just not quite in the same way as the former population
@dergunter1237

well in europe we reintroduced wolfs into a lot of environmentally protected areas so that they hand down all the native protected wildlife there. We managed, by this, to make several mountain goats go fully extincted and now the environmentally protected area is no longer protected and used for building hotels There are a lot of far more important animals than wolfs which are also no issue for farmers, a lot of insects and birds are endangered yet we see 0 attempt to protect those specy

Not sure if they've adapted to be semi-aquatic, but because of their jungle habitats, tigers and jaguars often hang around rivers and other bodies of water and regularly swim, play and hunt in water, and tigers in zoos love swimming in pools or rivers if they have one in their enclosure

Great video Lindsay, one extra thing I want to throw in is, I think still too many people visualize evolution as optimization i.e., adapting better traits to go with changes in behaviors. That is not how it works. "Good enough" is all mother nature cares about. She grades on a curve, if an animal can live long enough to pass on its genes that's at least a B+. That is how you can give some really weird things that may not be beneficial but still get passed on. Lots of birds are great examples, as some of the crazy crap males have makes their lives way harder but also helps attract females so as long as they get a girl, they will keep being weird.
@CorwinFound
@CorwinFound 11 ай бұрын
Yep. Another thing left out is that animals adapt and evolve new traits because of positive ecological opportunity, not just because they are experiencing pressure in their existing niche. It's why such craziness happens after a big extinction event. Suddenly say most of the large ocean predators die. Sure, as a land predator you can just stick around on land doing the same old same old. But there is some prime ocean real estate with _zero_ competition... if you can just figure out how to swim better. Obviously evolution isn't a decision or a plan. But the results millions of years later kinda look like it. Because evolution hates a vacuum. Open niches will be filled. Sometimes in very strange ways. Fingers crossed for seafaring kitties.

The way natural selection works is actually pretty simple. Mutations occur mostly randomly in a population's gene pool, and individuals born with a mutation that get to procreate pass on those genes. If the mitation is detrimental to that species survival, then the specimen will likely die before it can procreate. Environmental pressure plays a big role in genetic mutation too, that's where adaptations come in Organisms changing environment like the transition of fish to land, or of land mammals into whales back to the water, occurred out of uttermost necessity and a question of life and death As a matter of fact, successful adaptation to abrupt changes in the envioronment, is the most import aspect to a species survival and success

When I was in elementary school, I think second or third grade, we got assigned to make a PowerPoint about any animal we wanted. I thought it would be cool to do an animal other people didn’t know much about, and since I really liked cats I looked through lists of wild cats and found the fishing cat. It was my first time making a PowerPoint but I went all out on this. The frustrating thing though was that we had to use sources from the internet and from books, and obviously the school library didn’t have anything on fishing cats. But I made it work, and ever since then they’ve always stuck in the back of my mind as a really awesome animal. So happy that you’re introducing them to more people through this video

Yay! My favorite animal was mentioned! The jaguarundi historically lived in Texas and the southwest US, and over the years their range has expanded back over the Rio Grande in to Texas again. I used to live in a rural town in south Texas and every once in a while you’d see a jaguarundi running across a field or yard in to the brush. They’re fast, but when you see them you know it’s not a house-cat. Their just the wrong shape and they move like a wild animal. I never saw any near water (I usually saw them near oak thickets) but there’s a creek and a bay near where I live called Oso Creek and Oso Bay. There’s never been bears in this area and I’ve heard stories that the settlers originally saw jaguarundi fishing in the creek and bay, and called the animals “bearcats”. So they called the creek/bay “bear” after the jaguarundi. I have no evidence if it’s true or not, and jaguarundi definitely don’t live in that area now. But they definitely live in places in the south Texas brush country. It’s just difficult to map where because it’s such a big area and the jaguarundi like to stay hidden in dense tree or bush thickets. I’m pretty sure they’ve been seen in southern Arizona as well. Their range is actively expanding and conservationists can’t keep up with them.

Lindsay, I'd just like to say that watching your videos is one of the factors that have made me want to finally get my degree in biology. I'm 37, already have a degree (technically two actually) in a completely unrelated field (I'm a translator). But more and more I realize my passion is biology, especially zoology, but not exclusively (fungi fascinate me, for instance). I already enrolled in college twice; once not being able to finish one semester, than having to drop out half way through my second semester in a different university. Both times I dropped out for reasons completely out of my control, last time being about 5 years ago. Am I scared to try a third time, of all the work, and of graduating in my 40s? Sure, but more and more I feel it would ultimately be the right thing for me. Keep up the good work! I'm sure I'm not the first one you've inspired with your enthusiasm for the subject and I won't be the last. Passion is an amazing thing to see! Thank you!

Don't be afraid of lifelong learning. I'm 76, have a degree in furniture building, another in history and a third in art. And right now, since I discovered that my local universities have online degree programs, I'm giving serious thought to a doctorate in forest mycology. It will take a lot of work.

I think it’s fantastic that you offer solutions and ideas. No shit when you watch those nature shows that show you this animal doing great things in nature and then saying “there’s 12 of them left and by the end of the show there’s gonna be nine have a nice night.” It’s such a shitty vibe. You are a real one!

Your videos move at a pace that works well with my adhd. Love when I see a new one! I love how things evolve. Makes me wonder what kind of evolutionary steps nature takes (if the world even lasts that long) in 200 million years

There is a term for speculating and hypothesizing how different animals will evolve in certain situations, it’s called “speculative evolution” and there’s a lot of beautiful art of it on the Internet! Also, I had never heard of those lions before, that is incredibly awesome, but I’m surprised that you left out both tigers and jaguars, two big cats that I would consider very much to be semi aquatic. Jaguars in particular are incredibly evolved for a living an aquatic lifestyle and are incredible swimmers. Perfectly adapted for the Amazon, and for hunting caiman and capybara.

Another great cat video! I've had a rough couple of days bc of my cat's health issues, but he's getting surgery on Monday, so that will be alright. This was a good distraction, thank you

It's adorable when Lindsay discusses her height... obviously she is average, perfectly average. What's even better than that? Something she actually has control over. Like, knowledge about cats... and all the amazing information in her mind. That's awesome.

Great video. Though it is perhaps worth mentioning that the belief that cats have an aversion to water is a bit exaggerated, and depends very much on which species of cat. I’ve seen video of leopards, the cats famous for carrying their prey up into trees so they can feast in relative peace. Videos in which leopards hunt crocodiles in the river!

Jagarundi's are day-light ground hunters. Most cats are night hunters, and many of them hunt over the trees. The hunting behavior of jaguarundi avoids conflicts with larger cats, like ocelots, at night or over trees.
