That looks like a red drum aka redfish. They are an inshore saltwater species but they can tolerate fresh water. In some areas in the southeast they’ve become landlocked and survive but can’t reproduce. If that’s a freshwater lake he could have snuck in through a creek if you are close to any estuaries. They range from Texas all the way to Maryland and are delicious. Tight lines, brother!

I just read about it. Braunig and Calaveras are the only two freshwater lakes to hold redfish. Apparently they stock them. Keep looking for them, they can grow pretty big.

My guess is that they were injured as small fish and just grew like that😂
