I used to avoid steep terrain because i didnt have riding skills and avy training. Now i do. But ive also lost two friends to an avalanche in those years. I think about how much pain and sadness that brought to families and friends, ive seen it. Now i ride much more mellow stuff, I've switched to riding without binding to still make it challenging. I think im enjoying snowsurfing more than i enjoyed splitboarding. Its just not worth it for me anymore, ive had many great years and should be grateful im still here. There is no need to push the limit or prove anything to anyone, just have fun thats all.

Antti, thank you for releasing this piece - especially in a winter where many areas are dealing with a very difficult snowpack (Including us here in BC, Canada). This project was a beautiful culmination of the risks we face in the backcountry, as well as the contrasting ideas as to why we do it. I hope this video resonates with many, and gives us all a revived sense of responsibility as well as purpose to enjoy what beautiful nature we get to surround ourselves in (wherever in the world), while doing so safely. Cheers brother!

Awesome video, really appreciate the fact that more mountain professionals are showing the decision making side of freeriding along with the amazing ride footage. Hopefully this trend continues. One thing I had on the back of my mind when you finished your line and turned to watch your friend come down was "if it releases Antti is really far from the runout area if he needs to help with a rescue". Just some food for thought but I'm sure the camera lense makes it seem further than it is.
@AnttiAuttiChannel2 жыл бұрын
Cheers! Yes, I was quite far out but the rest of our crew were on a location where they could move faster into the area if something like that would happen. In many cases rider usually ends up lower part of the mountain to wait the next rider to come down. Rest of the crew is at the locations where they can move to sight faster. Obviously, that is not always the case but on a line like the one in Barras, that's the way it was planned from our end.

A great movie Antti. I had to watch it twice. Sharing your emotion and what this all means was very impactful to me. I frequently struggle with the risk vs reward in the mountains. The amazing lines can wait for me while we shred 25 deg powder though. Keep up the great work.

Cheers. Happy to hear the film worked for you this way. Yes, I know, it's better to ride the powder while it's there. Use those credits that mother earth is providing. Good snow and stability are something that should not be taken for granted.

Mukavia laskuja!

When was that filmed? (Sorry, same question as last time^^) I was in Lyngen in the first week of March and we took the decision to go to Tromsø on the Friday that week because the weather was bad. It was raining cats and dogs (love that expression). Because we flew back home to Switzerland on Saturday we had our hotel in Tromsø anyway, so was better than bad weather earlier in the week. But therefor didn't keep an eye on the weather in the arctic anymore. But if it was the week(s) after, it probably was a solid block of ice with some snow on top...

Most of the footage was filmed in between February - mid April.

Interesting that you store your gear in a roof box on the back of your van. How do you attach the roof box there? Do you need special mounting options for it? Very nice video, as always :).
@AnttiAuttiChannel2 жыл бұрын
I use there because then I got some more room in the campervan. The box is a combination of bike rack and roof box. There is DIY attachment with some screws and drilled holes. Planning to make an edit of this in some point future. Happy to hear the project works!

You talk like it was just slab that started the avalanche, but could clearly see the snow break up, witch means it's a small avalanche in the beginning. Maybe i misunderstood tho 🤷♂️ Anyways glad it worked of good! 🙌 Scary stuff 🤯
@AnttiAuttiChannel2 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly it was a small avalanche which I knew would happen and still took the decision to try it. Which obviously was a mistake and it really took me for a ride. As mentioned in the film. Mentally this mistake was much harder for me to accept because of my values didn't apply on that day.
@SplitPhotography2 жыл бұрын
@@AnttiAuttiChannel ok. Totaly understand! I once did the same on a hill side, almost on top. I had to cross a small couloir with lots of blown in snow, and i saw cracks in it. (Warning 1....) should have turned around... But i was all the way in to 90° mountainside with no snow, so figured i was safe. Was just this little stretch of like 5-6 m to cross. Then, the might boom... A sec of silence.... and the avalanche started. The top edge of it was in between my legs, so i just jump upwards, and didn't get pulled down. Lucky., but somewhat what foreseen. Broke my pole. And this small section triggered the whole mountain side to avalanche. Spooky. Also i was all alone. Puts things in perspective for sure 😔 Stay safe man! And remember, we might get lucky like this some times, but not to many. Consider them warnings. Maybe most to warn us about our self 😇

Spiltboarded in 20 countries. Once I had my daughter I retired from the sport. The fun and risk no longer matters compared to raising my kid. It's absolutely selfish when I see people die doing this sport with kids. I get that it might be your income and you have no choice but your kids will suffer having no father/mother
@AnttiAuttiChannel2 жыл бұрын
Yes. family matters the most. I do think however that you can do split boarding very safely and this film portrays only one side of this fun sport. I think that taking a risk is an act of individualism in an area that interests a person so much that he is willing test the boundaries.This is can been selfish for sure and without a doubt comes with big responsibility towards your loved ones. To make a mistake such as the one I did was tough. More tough than any other mistake I've done in snowboarding and the main reason for that is my family.
@nickb19662 жыл бұрын

I love the arctic! Do you ever think about God when you're out in His desolate winter wilderness? Jim Rippey got saved on the top of a mountain in Valdez after just looking around & recognizing God's handywork! I chased powder my whole life & it was an idol before God because I didn't know God nor give Him His rightful place in my heart & life as the highest priority. I now use my backcountry powder riding to serve Him & His Kingdom purposes. There's nothing more important than your eternal salvation & it's appointed once for a man to die & then comes the Judgment.

Love what You do! That kind of... I've got it today with my little mogul - lunch ramp in My woods - when places show their secrets. I wish You the best runs through Your secret worlds. Freeride Your Soul Dear Stranger from the North. When IT comes to The risk... Once I was invited to freeriding in Italy. I've asked the People who invited Me: "do We have a Guide?" They said: "what for?!"... I did not rode with them. I'm here for My Fammily first. Sometimes it's more important to be on Your tiny lunch mogul in Your Woods - hearing from Your Wife: "nice landing", than bombing big mountain lines. Snowboarding is about the Soul, and not the show.
