I always thought it was facinating listening to someone's vocal track, or albums of work, and then hearing an interview... realizing that performer has a speech issue in non-sung word or conversational dialog, it is a mindbender. Scatman actually gets his "singing style" from Scat Jazz performers, it was originally created by a jazz musician who couldn't play his trumpet, but still had to perform, so he went on stage and made trumpet sounds. Hence Scat music was born.

It's easy to do but hard to sound great. Someone else who can scat fairly well is a guy by the name of John Popper. He leads a band, "Blues Traveler" and is also a kickass harmonica player. Their album 'Four' was very popular with a few hits that made them huge. A few singles released off of there would be, "Hook", "Run-Around", "The Mountains Win Again". Another great song on the album that shows off Popper's scat talents, "Stand".

There's a line in this song that truly sums up this guy's character. He has a speech impediment, The only time that it's not noticeable is when he is scatting. But he doesn't Lord his ability to do it over anybody at all, in fact it's very clear he wishes everybody knew how to do it the way he did. And that line is obviously "if scatman can do it so can you" I did not appreciate this song enough when it was new. I liked it but I was pretty young and the only time I ever heard it was on Friday nights when I was at a skating rink because that was the only thing my pathetic tiny town had to do on the weekends. But regardless that place Holds a whole hell of a lot of my favorite memories. Its the first place I ever made out with a girl. It's literally where I learned to skate which helped because throughout the rest of my life I have had several part-time 2nd jobs at different skating rinks. I really wish Skating rinks were as popular now as they were then. But anyway the moment I hear this song I am right back in my little Hometown Circling that rink and trying to make sure the girls didnt catch me looking at their butt.
