Caught on camera! A loaded grain train headed northbound derails in front of an ambulance. We were working when this train derailed right in front of us. I started backing up and started blasting the air horn to get the woman's attention who was ahead of us because she was texting and had no idea what was happening right in front of us. We got on the radio and called for PD and FD to respond to the derailment. 10 cars total hit the ground. Here's a full video of the derailment and the damage aftermath.

All of these people commenting on here who don't know a thing about trains irks me. First of all, CSX is not the railroad in this video. The Ashland Railway is. So people blaming CSX don't know what they're talking about. CSX does own the hopper cars but they are being handled by the Ashland Railway. Secondly, this is a fairly minor derailment. Non of the cars tipped over and piled up on top of each other. Small derailments like this happen fairly often in yards and on smaller railroads like this one. Thirdly, this railroad is a Class 3 railroad. In North America there are three different classes of freight railroads. Classes 1, 2, and 3. Class 1 railroads are the big 7. Canadian Pacific (CP), Canadian National (CN), Norfolk Southern (NS), CSX, BNSF, Union Pacific (UP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS). These guys are nothing like class 3 railroads like the one in the video. They have tens of thousands of miles of track (CP and CN being transcontinental and operating in both the US and Canada) and make 100s of millions of dollars (if not billions) in revenue every year. They keep their major arterial lines in top shape and their secondary lines are better than what is in this video. Class 2 and 3 railroads do not make nearly the same amount of money as Class 1s so they sometimes don't have the resources to keep their tracks in 100 percent top notch condition. This usually isn't a problem as long as there are proper speed and weight restrictions in place. This particular accident originated on the crossing so there could have been a number of factors leading up to it. It looks like the rail broke and then the gauge separated too much and started dropping the cars on the inside of the rail. To all the people who think every train derails and all railroads are poorly maintained; that's not the case at all. This is just a minor derailment on a small railroad. Rail is still a lot safer and more efficient than shipping by truck. Each of those rail cars is probably 2 truck trailers worth of product.

CPWindsorsub I know the railroad in my hometown is a class 3. They have a speed restriction of 25mph max on whole track. It mostly transports grain to larger railroads. We have derailments mostly caused by track problems and old ties. One thing I did learn is when a crossing is put in the municipality is responsible for the initial instalation cost, and the railroad is resmponsible for maintaining it. We have a crossing that is on a highway used alot by trucks and is beat up contantly from the traffic and poor drainage. The railroad tries to fix it, but usually not well. It is a very rough crossing to go over.

As derailments go this one was pretty minor, at least. The bogeys left the track but otherwise the freight cars were undamaged; they were not carrying any sort of hazardous cargo and the train was very quickly e-stopped. It looks like a a broken rail in the crossing caused the derailment. The fact that it happened on a shortline/transfer road both set the stage for the derailment (shortlines can have sketchy maintenance practices) and assured it would be minor (shortlines usually operate at low speeds; they can have sharp curves and tend to have small track lengths).
@Markthomas007_
@Markthomas007_ 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah but it did destroy parts of the rails and as it seams the rail went up and pushed into the rail car. Prob with rerailing the train and fixing that section if track it would prob take a couple of weeks to fix if its fast. Also the look at the rail on the crossing was terrible with the crack going through it. Prob was a micro crack that grew when the train went over.

@@Ithinkiwill66 - I had a book on the British Columbia Railway. It described a line around a lake that was notorious for slides. The line was inspected, found okay, and a highrail (a pickup truck with flanged wheels) preceded a freight train. It was the dead of night. The track inspector could see the train behind him by the sweep of its headlight. Then, suddenly, no light. He called on the radio. No response. Breaking the rules, he slowly backed up, listening and watching, until something dark loomed behind him. It was a slide that knocked the first two locomotives into the lake. He was able to help the conductor out of the water, but the engineer was never found. Even with all the precautions, things can and do go wrong.

Depending on the location, "train guard" or "mail guard" can be the same thing as a (U.S.) conductor, who is in overall charge of the train. I used to enjoy watching a train go by when I was stopped at a crossing. Then I saw the movie Super 8. I know it was just a movie, but that's a lot of kinetic energy a train has to give up in a derailment. Those cars are gonna go where they wanna go!

1:24 There's your probable cause. The wheels are changing on damaged rails. Which caused one of them to raise up enough to go off the rail and bring at least 5 others with it This usually happens with bad track condition especially at crossings

exactly why I stay back from the ROW when waiting for a train to pass. The crossing that I usually use trains are moving 40 to 50 mph and a derailment or anything is going to get very dangerous very quickly..

Well the odds of it happening RIGHT THERE in that 100 foot section by the crossing out of the thousands of miles of tracks the train was on is so minute the odds of winning the Irish sweepstakes and being hit by lightning the same day are greater!

My grandfather work for the Great Northern/Burlington Northern for 40+ years and he never had a derailment or any other mishaps during his tenure which is excellent..in this very video the train starts out ok going over the crossing and everything is all well and good until what looks like and this is just a guess but I am going to say that the tracks broke in 1 of 2 places...either the track broke on the crossing or the tracks leading up to the crossing...just a guess
