CAVE RUN Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament CKF BKA

This video covers my weekend doing a really fun dual tournament between Cincinnati Kayak Fishing and Bluegrass Kayak Fishing at Cave Run Lake in Kentucky, from camping to prefishing, the tournament and the awards ceremony. The awesome guys at Strictly Sail & Kayak got campsites at Twin Knobs Campground for the Strictly Sail Fishing Team, which we all really appreciated and enjoyed! I had a day of prefishing and thought I had a decent plan for tournament day, but it didn't work out as I had hoped and I ended up not getting any keeper bass. But it was a great experience that will help me do better on the next one!

Thanks! I struggled a little this year with my mindset, as I raised my expectations and didn't meet them, but I guess that is something everyone goes through when trying to learn something new and challenging! Hopefully it pays off next season with better results!

Next time at Cave Run check out the area south of highway 1274 at Beaver Creek. Difficult at best to get a conventional boat into this area. Perfect for small craft.

Aw, my hubby's not caught anything in the last couple Buckeye tourneys, so you're not alone. He's used so many type lures as well. Do you think water temp has alot to do with it? Loved the beautiful lake views!

I guess part of the trail bonding is that we all struggle together! This is all so new to me still, I'm learning that it is only partly about fishing, it is also equally about managing your mindset and emotions as you get more invested in the sport, which I didn't do very well this season! I wish I could talk to the fish and understand! It drives me crazy that there aren't many concrete answers to what you need to fix to catch fish, it is all constantly changing. I'm sure water temp affects them, but I didn't think it really mattered until it got down into the 50s... but again, those dang fish won't tell me what they are thinking, so I have to just guess! I bought a pile of books on fish behavior to read in the off season, maybe by next spring I'll understand more! I love your sea glass art, by the way!

I was unprepared to see the bears sign at the campground, didn't even think to bring bear proof food storage! Luckily we got away with our sloppy preparations.

@@GirlGoneFishing just bring some bear spray next time. Funny story, I was hiking a short trail in the Grand Tetons. There was fresh pile bear scat on the trail right beside a bear warning sign. LoL

I really like Brookville, been there twice and definitely trying to get back before winter! I follow the Indiana kayak trails on facebook, and what intrigues me are these gravel pits that they pull 20" inch bass out of! I need to check some of those places out!

I rental the lynx standing and turning we’re top notch. Foot pedals made noise and burn out my legs didn’t feel like I was moving fast in flat water is that normal with your lynx?

My Mirage Drive doesn't make any unusual noises, it is a pretty quiet kayak in my experience. As for the leg burn, the "Hobie kick" definitely uses muscles I don't use every day, so it take a little bit to build up muscle stamina for kicking for miles. Some people prefer the "bicycle pedal" motion in some of the other pedal drive kayak brands, although I much prefer the Hobie style drive.

What is that small h rail in front of the kayak? That the 21”?

The guys at Strictly Sail customized that for me, cutting down that rail from, I think, an Outback kit way back when the Lynx first came out and a lot of accessories weren't available yet.

Here is how I see it... Cave Run is one of the most beautiful lakes around here and every time I'm there I feel lucky to spend time in such an amazing setting. I've caught some really nice bass there, and there is always a chance at an accidental big muskie with every cast. It is challenging to find bass there as it is with a lot of our local pressured waters, but that doesn't deter me!

@@GirlGoneFishing almost all the bass you catch are in their slot limit of 12-15 inches. With all the structure, the weed beds, the standing timber, everything it has to offer. It should be producing better bass than it does.

I think there is so much attractive bass habitat, that the bass are pretty scattered. But I get what you mean by that slot limit… I have fished the Friends of Cave Run Memorial Bass Tournament a few times and been super frustrated with those slot fish. In kayak fishing we don’t have to abide by a slot limit since we practice Catch Photograph & Release in our tournaments.
