+John Segway Considering Cave Story is one of the most famous Indie game successes and in many ways popularized the idea even way before Minecraft, I don't think Pixel or Cave Story will be forgotten any time soon. It's a pretty romantic tale, really. An amateur programmer wants to make a game, and spends five whole years doing programming, writing characters and plot, painting graphics, and composing music, all by himself, and the result is beautiful. Not only does he get recognized, but his game gets picked up by a major publisher and gets several remakes that do mostly aesthetic overhauls, keeping the game itself and story mostly intact. It's the ultimate video game rags-to-riches success story. (Honorable mention to Notch with Minecraft, but a team grew around it so it lacks the "all on my own" romanticism, and it isn't the kind of game that people usually think about when they dream of making a game. Plus, Cave Story happened first, before Indie games were on a commercial rise) Regardless of anyone's opinions of the game, its place in video game history is undeniable. It really proved, definitively, that all you need to create a fantastic game is enough creative vision and dedication. It proved it to everyone, too--not just consumers, but other potential Indie developers, but most importantly the big publishing companies. Not only do we have mass, popular digital distribution services like Steam to publish indie games, we also have software like Unreal Engine 4, which is completely (and legitimately) free of charge--until you're successful, after which you start paying a modest royalty fee. It's amazing that a big software company like Epic Games, which used to sell Unreal Engine licenses to developers for thousands of dollars, has switched to this super-accessible business model just because they recognize the commercial viability of the small teams and hobbyist amateurs. Pixel built something almost from the ground-up that was on-par with many handheld games of the time, and that cascaded until we now have BIG name tools for FREE to create our visions. Pixel and Cave Story may not be as widely-known as Notch and Minecraft, but I think they caused bigger ripples in the game industry. Maybe not in general media and culture outside of video games, but Cave Story's indirect influence on the game industry specifically is mind-boggling. I daresay that, without Cave Story, the Indie scene would be *years* behind where it is now. Considering the sheer number of Indie games that cite Cave Story as their inspiration, or that cite games that cite Cave Story as inspiration, it's just a massive butterfly effect. There's almost no way to tell what games have long chains of inspirations that can be traced back to Cave Story. The whole "Retreaux" aesthetic of mimicking old-school graphics and sounds is probably inspired by Cave Story, which was pretty far behind its big-publisher contemporaries in terms of aesthetic resources. A ton of Indie games with this aesthetic style cites Cave Story as an inspiration, and tons more that DON'T list Cave Story probably got the idea from a game that DID get it from Cave Story. And that's just the most visible example. Cave Story may not have been the first of its kind, but whatever happened with lucky timing or some other sweet spot, I think it definitely lodged itself firmly in the history books of the game industry. *Especially* Indie games, but I think it'll gain even more recognition as time goes on and the people who track video game history get a better big-picture idea of the industry's developments.

+John Segway I'm sure he will, but even if he won't, his legacy will. Look at the successes of LISA and Undertale. While I didn't care for the first one, it's still good in its own right, and without Pixel and Cave Story, I doubt that either would exist.

You know what? Cave Story should have a prequel rather than a sequel. How quote and curly ended up on the island, how ballos became...well a ferris wheel of eyes, how kazuma, the doctor, and all those people came and researched, how the doctor betrayed them. I'm most interested in seeing how the robot war on the surface came about and how quote and curly got seperated.
@snapcracklebop10 жыл бұрын
And adding to this idea, how Arthur became the hero he is famed and how he defeated the Red Demon. Also, how the Mimiga came to know about the red flowers, how they knew and dealt with the Robot War... basically another side of the story seen from a Mimiga point of view. Some of these plot points were mentioned, but not shown. A prequel would definitely be the best option to showing these events happening.
@pieguy15910 жыл бұрын
What should the main character(s) of the prequel be (the character(s) that are controlled by the player)? I say Quote, Curly, or Arthur.
@snapcracklebop10 жыл бұрын
It would be really cool if the prequel is to have two playable characters: Quote for the human/robot perspective of the story and Arthur for the Mimiga perspective. The story could shift between the two characters, and at the point when Arthur is killed, Quote's perspective takes over for the entire game. I imagine that Curly is also a main character, but the computer controls her during the "Destroy the crown" portion of the prequel. Just like Cave Story! oh man talking about a possible prequel makes me so excited

I guess I expected more from a guy who had such powerful magic that without even focusing it but just letting it loose he destroyed a kingdom. He should've shown off that magic a lot more. I mean, the moment Ballos enters his second form was cool, but then he just hopped around dumbly. I do understand that this was likely near the end of development, but for the finale it should be a fight actually worth fighting.

Quote would seriously work in Smash Bros with his own booster gimmick. Give him attacks and everything based on his weapons in the game, and then allow a function similar to how Quote moves in Cave Story, where you jump into the air, point a direct, and press jump again. Instead of him double jumping, he could use the 2.0 booster. Either that, or he could use the 0.8 booster, and have a jump similar to Lucas's, Ness's, and Mewtwo's second jump. Not as cool as the 2.0 idea, but come to think of it 2.0 would make him SERIOUSLY top tier and OP as all hell.
@ABCMurshomkingdom8 жыл бұрын
If he makes it someday in Smash I don't hope him as a Megaman clone ;--;
@765craven48 жыл бұрын
The 2.0 idea wouldn't be that strong unless he was able to go quite a distance with it. Would his up special be the machine gun since it's his only method of upward movement without a jump+booster? He could be awesome in Smash but really awkward to implement due to his lack of any actual melee combat, his only melee weapon is the blade and he still throws that like a dagger. Even Megaman has some melee attacks in his arsenal (even in his games, think smash kick or top spin) while Quote has none, so if the devs wanted him in Smash they'd have to get creative.
@DaDerpyBro8 жыл бұрын
Fishin' Lakitu I'm thinking the blade could be like a short bit of distance for his side smashes and down smashes. They've got range, but it isn't much. So it should be treated like that in-game. It would be a Level 2, since it has the least range. 765Craven Since he doesn't really have a way of going higher without those tools, maybe they could use Up-B for something else instead, similar to how they did Jigglypuff. Or, perhaps, maybe he could have a possibility similar to that of the Dair of Megaman in SSF2. If you don't know, SSF2's Megaman has a Dair that pushes him up a tad. Perhaps we can make that with a level 3 machine gun, that pushes him up a bit more than MM's Dair would, to increase his recovery.
@765craven48 жыл бұрын
Derpy Dolphin That could work, though if they made him able to use it for extended periods of time (how it is in Cave Story) it would be seriously broken. I'm sure they wouldn't make it that way, maybe 4-5 shots for a little bit of distance, or maybe it would just extend his airtime a little bit, kinda like Lucarios down air in Brawl.
@DaDerpyBro8 жыл бұрын
765Craven Perhaps they would just add the 0.8 Booster instead, making a jump similar to Mewtwo's. Whether the 2.0 booster goes a long distance or not, it'd be pretty overpowered in itself.

You know as one of the more popular songs in the soundtrack, it sees a lot of remixes and rearrangements, and some of them are pretty good, but... Call me old fashioned, I think I still prefer the raw and simple power of the original. It communicates one simple idea and hammers it home into the player's mind as they blast their way through their toughest and most hectic challenge yet. *"Time is running out. We're all counting on you."*
@iennefaLsh2 жыл бұрын
Cave Story's original soundtrack is fulfilling enough for me. I feel the other two official remasters do have their own flairs, but are missing something. I don't think it's just my bias for original versions.
@shoopdahoop678 Жыл бұрын
I will always prefer the original over the remixes because there's an element I feel the remixes forgot about this song: uncertainty. The beginning of the song to me has always given me the image of falling down into that first room, the wind rushing in your ears, as the game asks you: "why? Why have you come here? Freedom and safety was *right there* and you jumped into hell." And the problem with the remixes is that all of them, made years after the game came out, years after everyone knew that the Sacred Grounds was the path to the true ending where the island doesn't fall and you fly off into the sunset, already know the answer. Whether it's the heavy synths from DM Dokuro's remix or the electric guitar from GaMetal's remix, they come out swinging with the first few notes hitting like a punch to the face and the promise that the rest of the song will be just as bombastic, with the melody overtaking the percussion. But the original doesn't do that. Flash back to when the game first came out, the first time you would have heard this. You have no idea why you're going in here. Obviously, as a game, you know there's something to "beat" here, but you have no idea what's going to happen; this place could become your tomb *whether you win or not*. This isn't heroic, it's suicide, and the game knows it. That's why the melody gets overpowered by the percussion; you know there's music playing, but it's drowned out by the beating of your heart in your ears. Only later, about the time you get to the falling rocks room, or the long combat corridor, when there's no time for doubt anymore does the melody rise in volume to match the percussion; it's go time. But it's not overpowering or bombastic - this is a determined, focused chorus as you fight for your life for reasons you don't really know. I do agree that you get the vibe of time running out and people counting on you from the original as well, but I feel like it never loses that uncertain edge, that you might be the only ones who don't get a happy ending if and when you succeed, especially since you already had a taste of a "bad ending" when Curly gets washed away after the core.

Ground attacks use the polar star (with the exception of down tilt and down smash, which use the blade), and air attacks also use the blade. Both are modelled after it's level 1 form. Standard B: Nemesis, starts off with small range, low damage an knockback, but at 50% it goes to it's level 2 form where it deals more damage, has higher knockback and range. At 100%, it goes to it's level one form with further increased damage, knockback, and range. Side B: Fireball, one use shoots one, and up to three can be on screen at once. Disappears after a short time or upon hitting an enemy. Bounces along the ground. Modelled after it's level 2 form. Up B: Machine Gun: Shoots a continuous fire of lightly damaging shots for a short time. While on the ground, he shoots above him, while in the air he shoots below him, propelling him upwards. Can change directions like villager's Up B, but doesn't last nearly as long. Modelled after it's level 3 form. Down B: While holding, charges the bubbler with up to 18 bubbles circling around him. Press again to release them in the direction you are facing. Doesn't do much damage or knockback. Modelled after it's level three form. When grabbing opponents, his pummel is the level one blade. All his throws except his down throw are all followed up by the level two polar star, much like how fox and falco use their laser in their grabs.

The music is blasting, and you're doing your best not to lose all your health, this text about a mysterious person who has only been named once keeps appearing keeping your heart going. Cave Story is easily one of my favorite games for multiple reasons, this is one of them

My deaths because I'm actually good at the game. 5 first room (just the entrance and the part where you fall down.) 10 second room (it is kinda hard there 3 third room 4 mid boss (its kinda tricky if you don't know what you're doing or don't kill it quickly) 0 health room (why even include it?) 0 Ballos first form 0 Ballos second form 0 Ballos third form 20 Ballos fourth form. UGH!!!
@phanto45728 жыл бұрын
I don't believe you while yes the health rooms is not needed your deaths are 42 in total which is incredibly small compared to the average player even if your good that doesn't really matter as much because you can't practice the tricky jumps and the spikes so what I'm saying is think your a lier

I remember when I finally beat this game with the best ending. Oh, I went through Hell so many times, it became child's play to get to Ballos. He was where It got borderline impossible. But after many weeks, by some mere fluke, I finally defeated him. I finally got the best ending. I was so proud back then. I was never able to replicate it though...

You just got done kicking the Doctor's ass. The Balcony starts to shake as it begins to crumble. You and Sue hastily get out of there, but then... What's this? A shed? You enter it, unknown as to where it leads you too. You then see a save point and a life/missile refill point, but also a hole. You fall into the hole. The weapons weaken and the timer starts... Welcome to hell.

A neat little thing to think about when you're in the Sanctuary, the main reason it's referred to as "Hell" but has Angels is because in the Bible Demons are actually just cursed Angels sent to serve the Devil.

“Would you like to know about the tale of two robot soldiers, clad together in a iron bond, who journeyed through hell itself, while fending off swarms of angels and cursed architecture, on a final effort to bring an end to the violent, yet sorrowful, legacy of a mad sorcerer and his untamed magic?” “Although, I wouldn’t wanna bore you.” “After all, it is just an old cave story.”

The more I listen to this track the more I think that Bloodstained Sanctuary had a time limit at some point in development but was scrapped Cause like "Running Hell" The island is falling Just about every part of it seems designed to get you to want to rush through it quickly to avoid damage This track is a fucking panic attack Maybe it was taken out because it would've been overkill lmao

I don't care if I've died 219308129038190238190248012948 times. As long as I get to hear the song I'm ok with dying another 46854765489734289034029 times. Then I probably would need special help for playing too much >.>
I remembered the first time I played running hell. It took me an hour to get past the spikes at the beginning. After I finally did it I somehow managed to get myself to the first boss battle without dying. When I confronted the boss though, I got annihilated. I didn't play for a few days after that.

I believe Toby said at one point that Cave Story was one his main inspirations (and there are actually a LOT of similarities between the two games if you think about it). So it seems likely.
@DaDerpyBro8 жыл бұрын
FourthDerivative Well, yeah. There' s a lot of similarities, so I bet he could have POSSIBLY taken some story elements from Cave Story. 1. The main race is a race of monsters. 2. The game takes place in an underground region. 3. Some of the monsters are nice and civil, while others aren't as sentient. 4. The ending takes place as the character leaves that underground region. 5. In both games, there is a dark form of power allowing people to live after death, and be like a complete god. So, he could have taken story elements. Though, in terms of gameplay, it's nowhere similar. And plus, the whole point on your pacifist, neutral, and genocide interactions with the characters in Undertale are completely his own idea. I haven't exactly heard of another person do that.

I can imagine Quote having a higher-quality, proportional sprite to use in the Scott Pilgrim vs The World game. Quote would be awesome in that..
