What a great discussion! And I was kind of amazed to see this specific discussion pop up in my feed just weeks after I started writing a term paper on Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" and cyclical/linear time (Eliade, Hegel/Marx/Christianity &c.). What Jan-Ove said about great writers' use of repetition maps perfectly onto Steinbeck's novel, especially the final vignette immediately after the flood. This is the first time I've properly considered these matters, and suddenly I see it showing up everywhere. The mystic in me is inclined to say the stars have aligned, but I suppose profane coincidence is the more reasonable option as always.
