I want to use this method to dye several skeins and then knit a sweater with them as the colors are just gorgeous! I know the first obstacle will be trying to get all the skeins to look like they're from the same dye lot. Second, after that rinse is done at the end with the same temperature water will the yarn be "dye fast" when it dries? For example, if you wore the sweater over a white shirt would the dye bleed on to the shirt? When I'd go to hand wash the sweater would more dye come out by in the sink? Thanks for a great tutorial!

@cbugstudio6 жыл бұрын
Hmm good question Carol. You may want to dip-dye it in a pot first, but it shouldn't need drying in between dyes. As you can see with the outcome here, the speckles turn into blobs anyway so it'll be a fun surprise no matter how you do it!

Hi, may I ask you, what's the ratio of water and vinegar in ml to soak the woollen yarn in the solution.

Good question! It's about 1/4 c. vinegar to 100g of fiber, which you'll soak in as much water as needed to entirely cover the fiber, but it isn't necessary to be very precise about it. Hope this helps!

Love this! Can't wait to try it but was wondering if you can us a normal microwave used to microwave food (or does it have to be just for microwaving dyed yarn?) and also, I know if you do it stovetop, you need to use cookware just for dying. If you do it that way, after you pull out the yarn, can you just dump out the water (same with when you do a rinse at the end to remove the dyes) out into the kitchen sink or again, do you need a special sink due to the dyes? Thanks so much!!!

Thank you for the info.! It appears that those dyes for cotton seem to work without heat. Just to make sure I understand, I would follow the same instructions in the video, aside from the microwave part, correct? Should I leave the yarn (or cotton shirt, if I do the dyeing before cutting it into yarn) rolled up in the cling wrap for a certain amount of time, since I won’t be microwaving it? Thanks, again!!
@cbugstudio7 жыл бұрын
Hi Veronica - follow the instructions on the packaging, but I've always used warm-to-hot water. You'll have to let us know how it turned out!
@suzieq71487 жыл бұрын
Fiber Reactive dyes for cotton need soda ash in order to be permanent. Water can be room temp. It’s a lot more time consuming and messy, as the dyes need to sit for anywhere from 2-24 hours, and unlike the acid dyes on wool, it needs a LOT of rinsing to get the extra dye out (I used to have a business dyeing cotton)

Question, I am wanting to just use the microwave for the whole process since it is cheaper electric wise and seems to be faster. Can you tell me if there is like a pros or cons to using a stove top steamer vs a microwave? Do the colors come out different or does it affect the yarn in a certain way? I would really love to know! Thank you in advance!
@cbugstudio6 жыл бұрын
Hi there - great question! The advantages of working on the stove is that it can be easier to check on the progress of the yarn, plus you can work on multiple skeins of yarn at a time. Also, sometimes it can be quite hot coming out of the microwave! However, we've made plenty of skeins in the microwave to great success. You'll have to find what works for you and let us know!

You mentioned putting it in the oven at 220°, but you didn't say for how long. Or is this another thing of checking the yarn frequently to see of its finished? Also, the saran wrap us safe in the oven? Thanks, Tina
@cbugstudio7 жыл бұрын
Great question Tina! I think a microwave is most efficient and steaming it on a stovetop to be the second most efficient but if you're going to use the oven, check it after 20 minutes and press to see if the liquid looks clear when you press down on the skein, and check every 10 taking it out after an hour, max, if you can't achieve clear liquid before then. Good luck!
@tinahobert19467 жыл бұрын
Creativebug Studios I went for the stove top, and I'm not sure if it was you or possibly someone else that suggested, using a metal hanger bent to keep it out of the water, if you don't have a steamer. Not sure what caused it, the heat against the hanger and the saran wrap, or just the heat over all, but the saran wrap melted-yes melted!! I was practically crying while trying to hurry and pull the saran wrap off the yarn. Not from the heat being felt when I originally, out of instinct, pulled it out with my bare hands and tried to rip away the wrap, unsure if had damaged the yarn, but from the sheer frustration of it not working right for me. Obviously something I did was wrong. Not at all blaming you in anyway just so you know. P.S. I won't know if the yarn is ruined until it's clear, and possibly dried.
@cbugstudio7 жыл бұрын
Oh you're kidding! I've done this many (hundreds!) times and the plastic wrap has never melted - I'm so sorry this happened to you! Your poor hands!
@tinahobert19467 жыл бұрын
Creativebug Studios isn't that insane? I've seen it done a hundred times before too. I even went with a branded wrap to be sure it wasn't "cheap" or too thin, so I'm not too sure what happened. The positive is I saved the yarn, no plastic wrap got on it, so I'll take the reddened hands for a few days! Lol all in the name of creativity, right??

Felting requires agitation, heat, and soap, so if you take away one of those elements, it has much less chance of felting. Be sure not to move your yarn around too much until it has dried entirely. And yes - squishing the pigment around could certainly work. Good question!

Hi there Faith, great video, thank you, and I adore your swatch! I'm doing my first ever dyeing and on Christmas Day I did a dusky rose/purple/lavender semi-solid immersion dye on 100% superwash merino. Today, I've done your speckle method on a 55/45 BFL/silk skein in a steamer. I only have a blue and bright pink dyes. (Don't worry, this will be rectified VERY soon!) I steamed for 35 mins but I think the heat may have been too low for most of that time as loads of pink dye came out when I washed it. Or could it have been because I had dry lumps of dye powder that didn't get properly absorbed? I was too impatient to wait for it to cool, so I put hot water in the sink (white, ceramic) and carefully added the yarn. Moved about vv gently with tongs and water went deep pink, but after about 30 seconds, the water started to get lighter until after about 2 mins, it was completely clear again! I gave it another hot rinse with some Soak, and a tiny bit of pink dye came out but again after a minute or so the water was completely clear. Would you expect this to happen? And is my dye fast now or not? Many thanks, Helen x

How about acrylic yarn
@cbugstudio5 жыл бұрын
We wouldn't recommend dying acrylic yarn at home. Since it's a synthetic, the dyes needed to produce vibrant color can be much harsher! If you just want to play around, you can follow these using Kool aid but the colors will come out much paler. Let us know if you give it a try!
