A scene that can always make me tear up no matter how many times I see. A scene that might possibly make this film the best around.

The part that got me the most is when she took his hand and put it on her cheek. It shows that she really did love him, but it pained her knowing that they couldn't be together because of their customs. This movie has always been one of my favorites, so classy and beautiful.

+LeahTriniteeMJLuv3 - It's true that the film is classy and beautiful, but you do know that it isn't true? It's just Hollywood. Chulalongkorn wasn't a child. He was 15 when his father died and he became king...with a regent. This allowed him to travel to India to continue his education. He assumed power when he was 20. Anna Leonowens wasn't a beautiful, young, English woman. She was Anglo-Indian and made up most of the information she gave out about her ancestry and early life. She also didn't teach all subjects, nor did she educate the prince to modern ideals of democracy. She was hired ONLY to teach English but later became English secretary to Monkut, the king. The prince had other European tutors and many of the reforms, particularly (for the film) abolishing prostration, had earlier been set by Mongkut, his father. Chulalongkorn instituted many reforms but not because of Leonowens. His mentor was Si Suriyawongse, a powerful noble loyal to the house of Chakra...and to the prince's father. He got his ideas from his studies abroad. Leonowens had left Siam and was trying to negotiate a return when Mongkut died. Chulalongkorn wrote her friendly letters, but did not invite her back into the country. Leonowens' two novels were, basically, potboilers with little real fact about Siamese royalty. www.nytimes.com/1996/04/07/theater/theather-a-confection-built-on-a-novel-built-on-a-fabrication.html Both movies are banned in Thailand. (You may find it interesting that she was the great-aunt of Boris Karloff...real name, William Henry Pratt.)

+tredzwater This was never offered as a historical document. This is a fictional story, and musical. Seriously, there is nothing wrong with the simplistic plot. Most movies even "based on true events" are way off the original story.

I was a youngster, probably not even as old as Louis, Anna's son, when I first saw this movie with my parents. When I realized that the King was dying, I remember crying and not entirely understanding why I felt bad for this guy who was so bossy and mean to Anna. As I grew older,I understood the love between them and how he was changed as a result of her influence, and still cry when I see this scene.

I had the great opportunity of seeing the broadway musical in New York City back in the 70s, where Yul Brynner was acting. It was great. And this particular scene was, of course, tear - jerking, as many in the audience were crying, too. One of the best musicals, ever, although it was critiqued and banned in Thailand, of which, later, I was to understand why, having lived in Bangkok for seven years. Having done so, I came to understand why the Thais had come to love their late king, King Bhumipol Adulyadej so much. He was a kind - hearted, giving, highly talented, man of the people. May Thai - Philippine relations grow stronger more than ever. - from the Philippines

I was in a production of this twice in elementary school. Once as a child and the second time as a wife. I also played the role of the angel/Buddha in the Uncle Toms Cabin play within the play. Those were such fun times that I look back on fondly.

The story of how anyone can change, no matter what, is powerful enough, but the beautiful soundtrack with so many minor chords throughout the melodies make the songs more hauntingly mournful. Of all of Rodgers and Hammerstein's wonderful musicals--and there are several to choose from--I believe The King and I resonates in the soul the most.

The first version of The King And I which I remember seeing when I was still a child was the 1999 animated one. As anyone who's watched it knows, the King survives in that one. Obviously, that version takes a lot of liberties from the original musical and 1956 film. When I finally watched this version a few months ago (I'm almost 21 now), I cried my heart out at the end. This final scene is just so moving in many ways, and especially for me since I never expected the King to die after having watched the 1999 version. Obviously, the 1999 version is meant primarily for children and it was a truly joyful film for me as a child, and I am still fond of it till this day. But the original 1956 version... What a masterpiece. The acting, the singing and orchestration, the dancing... Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. Just absolutely fantastic. What a classic.

Well, only a couple of weeks ago I performed in THE KING AND I onstage at Cwmbran Congress Theatre in various roles - Phra Alack, and also dancing in THE SMALL HOUSE OF UNCLE THOMAS. Me and the palace guards were in the final scene, and during the last performance the girl who played Ying Yeowlak brought tears to my eyes on stage with her speech. And considering I had to command a tear as the King was dying, it worked. I had one of the best weeks of my life being in this production!
