It’s not a joke at all. It’s a lie. It’s a myth that was started by the beverage companies 40 years ago to try and ease consumers consciences about the pollution they were creating. As long as the manufacturers of this waste can convince their consumers that it’s all gonna be OK they can continue with the very profitable venture of using plastics instead of more expensive packaging materials. And the beauty, part of it is when things don’t get recycled they blame the customer or the recycling center or the trash company rather than taking responsibility for the fact that they’ve always known this would end up in landfills.

When a bin labeled “recycle” goes directly to a landfill, why aren’t there legal consequences for a corporation behind that? There’s literally no attempt to actually recycle. I worked at a ~1000 person company that did really try to do the right thing with recycling. We had 3 bins, garbage, recycling, and documents to be shredded. Someone sent a picture to the CEO of all 3 bins being emptied into the same garbage truck by the waste management company. He was not happy, the company was paying extra for shredding and recycling services. Long story short the waste company had to pay back the extra they'd been charging and when the contract was up a different company took over the contract. I don't imagine it hurt the waste company too much, we were just one customer out of many to them. But I bet we weren't the only one paying for services we weren't getting.

The issues I see are: 1. Those customers can't hand over their personal mugs to be used instead of a disposable cup; 2. There are from 10 to 25 vehicles, mostly ICE, sitting idling. Edit: Carbon Dioxide emissions? I wonder if these customers, who are spending $5 to $15 or more every workday (could be $1,000 to $3,000 a year) are having any difficulty doing things like saving to buy a house or for their kid's college or their retirement.

I think CBS did a really great job of investigative reporting here, but it's much easier to identify problems than it is to solve them. I want everyone to know that plastic cups are, in general, not particularly recyclable, and are certainly not particularly cost-effective to recycle. So regardless of whether cups are recycled or not, the net difference is fairly negligible. The far more important question is this: How do we reduce the amount of waste we produce? Think back about how drinks were served before everything was disposable. Bars and cafes would serve drinks in washable glass containers, to be consumed on -premises, with the glass being fully washable and reusable afterwards, sometimes for many years. NOTHING else is really going to make much of a difference. Our disposable, to-go society is the real culprit, and that problem is going to be quite a bit more difficult to solve.
@Swoop4loop7 күн бұрын
One of the biggest misunderstood concepts is "recycling". For anyone whose ever taken an environmental course in college or high school, in order for something to be truly recyclable, it must be free of any residual food or debris. If there's anything left over and you throw it away, know it will go to a landfill. Plastic is a big problem, but true recycling is alot harder than companies make it out to be, leading to recycling being more of a buzz word than anything else. Not to mention recycling was created as a marketing gimmick by big beverage to make people think they were doing good for the environment and that companies were environmentally conscious. All they did was shift the burden of "recycling" on to the consumer without taking responsibility themselves.

I have no plastic recycling options in my area. We used to have bins in our small town and many neighboring towns. They were all taken away several years ago.

This “study” assumes that no one saw that they glued a non-recyclable air tag in the bottom of a CLEAR plastic cup. If a Starbucks or recycling employee would have seen it, they would have properly removed to from the recycling stream because the metal device would have gummed up the recycling process. And I agree with the others, once the trash is properly sorted and picked up by a waste management company, it is not Starbuck’s responsibility. They cannot control if that company is following the law or dumping it at a landfill. Why didn’t these news people talk to the waste companies?

It’s sad that in 1989 I pushed my parents to start recycling at our house. Many years later……seems like nothing is going to change in the world until plastic is removed from the world’s packaging repertoire.

15 bucks for a coffee and yall have a plastic problem is crazy.

I think what happened as described in this video is far worse than if Starbucks just provided a trash bin for everything (regardless of compost vs. recycle vs. landfill) like how it used to be years and years ago. It's about honesty vs. misleading customers.

Before everyone gets mad at Starbucks, the main reason why recyclables end up at the landfill is because of contamination by non-recyclable waste. This includes food, paper towels and napkins, bottles with liquid still in them, diapers, cloth, the wrong types of plastic (especially plastic bags), and pretty much anything not on the acceptable list. Recycling plants that take commingled recycling use huge machines to rough sort the materials before they go to hand sorting. Some things get caught in the machines, causing them to shut the machines down and cut the contaminants out. Plastic bags are the main culprit, but cables and textiles cause serious problems, too. Tiny items like bottle caps fall right through the sorters and pile up on the ground. Literal garbage, like diapers, wood, and food waste, has to be picked out of the line by hand. The stuff that gets past the hand sorters gets baled up to ship to companies that process the materials. If the bales have too much contamination, the processors ship the waste back to the recyclers on the recycler’s dime. There is very little demand for post-consumer recycled plastic, so it takes very little contamination to render a huge supply garbage. Some recycling companies will fine business that send them garbage in their recycling streams, so those businesses just dump all their recycling and trash bins into the same dumpster except for the things they can directly control, like cardboard boxes. Customers are lazy and ignorant and throw trash in the recycling streams. If you’re throwing things into the recycling bin that are not explicitly stated to be taken by your local recycling company, you are a big part if the problem. Wishcycling doesn’t help anyone. When in doubt, throw it out.

Californians recycle better than most. (Oregon, and Washington are good as well). I know people in Butte, Montana and when I visited there, NO ONE recycled anything!! ……HORRIBLE place!!!

Sometimes rural areas have limited recycling options because they have a low volume and it's just too expensive. CA for example has better options because there's lots of people, and landfills are filling up, fast. The cities have more incentive to recycle....its cheaper because of volume. Best option is to use our own cups.

A simple solution is to have the employees ask if you want it in a reusable mug or glass. They don't ask most of the time.

Starbucks should offer a discount if you bring your own mug. $1 less if it is any mug $2 less if it is Starbucks brand. Everyone should do this, McDonald’s, movie theaters, sports stadiums, etc. I know a theater chain in Arizona and and Southern California called Harkins sells a reusable cup starting in November for $7 every year, then every time you visit the theater you can bring that cup back through December of the next year you can fill it up for $3. We need more of that.

There's a reason they call it "wish-cycling". Ultimately, for as much money as they make, they need to use biodegradable materials for all their cups. The state of waste management as it is, the fact most markets won't buy our plastic, and microplastics are contributing to environmental damage, are all reasons to ditch plastic in this regard.

It’s not Starbucks fault; it’s the fault of the company who picks up the trash/recycling. Same with my local trash/recycling. One company will come and pick up the trash, then they come back around and get the recycling bin. I would not be surprised if they end up at the same place

So Culver's used to try to recycle, but the problem is that the plastics and/or the paper cups or containers need to be clean and dry in order to be able to recycle them. So the reason why these "recyclable" cups or containers end up in the landfill is because they are not clean and dry. At least, this is what the manager at Culver's told me. Which makes sense because here in Michigan, we're told that anything we put in our the recycle bin needs to be clean and dry.

There is a reason why countries that really do recycling like Japan have 6 different recycling bins for each type of material. Aint nobody getting paid to separate your recyclable plastic from the combustibles
