It's interesting that in 1978 they speculated that in 1998 we would be drilling through Colorado mountains to find oil. In fact, the largest oil deposits turned out to be offshore, but at that time they had not yet developed the technology to either locate them or extract the oil. I believe that in the 1970's little drilling had been done off the Gulf Coast, for instance, at the depths that are typically reached today.

The largest shale oil reserves in the world are in Colorado and shale oil reserves are 4 times more than conventional oil. In fact, in the early '80s, Exxon had a $5 billion dollar shale oil project in Colorado, but canceled it in 1982 because oil prices had come down to the point where it was not economically practical to mine it.
