I don’t think it’s the color barrier in college What I think is that he is a man of God. And I think there is more discrimination in colleges against religion.

I love this podcast and Gary is fantastic. But it’s tough for me to accept Gary’s rationale for why Tang wasn’t hired “by a good job” until K-state. He is essentially accusing every major university who had an opening and didn’t hire Tang as racist. Seems like much too broad of a stroke to paint - esp without ANY specific examples of racist individuals, words or actions.

Exactly his line of “there is not a lot of coaches that look like the players they are coaching” is such a bad take. Yes people of color disproportionately are the players at a collegiate level and up, but people of all races love basketball and study and coach the sport. What Gary was saying sounded a lot more like trying to make jobs unavailable for coaches that are not African-American. Instead of making it an even playing field and let cream rise to the top. Regardless of what the person looks like.

Tang even said he had lots of lower level job offers and was waiting for a special place. I highly doubt he has any intentions of going anywhere for a long time. He stuck with Baylor for 19 years, he's a loyal man.

The only thing that would worry me about keeping Tang is watching Bob Huggins leave us after a single season years ago. But Jerome Tang did stay with Baylor for 19 years, so he does seem to have a sense of loyalty.

After reading an article that Jarome made $12,000 a year when he coached a high school team, and now makes $2.1 million makes me think that he knows how to pinch a penny and that another $2 million a year, won't really make a difference.
