This was a great lineup! I always loved the Garfield show. The Mighty Mouse reboot from the creator of Ren & Stimpy was ahead of its time as a preview of the humor and animation styles that would become big in the 90s. Although this was near the end of classic 80s SatAM, personally I think Saturday mornings blocks were still great even into the mid 90s. With tastes changing and more competition from cable, the networks were willing to try some weirder stuff. But it's true that the level of quality was higher on weekday afternoon blocks by that time, with the Disney Afternoon beginning the trend, and the arrival of WB's shows like Animaniacs, the great animated Batman series, and more.

It was one idiot who started the whole controversy- the Rev. Donald Wildmon, a United Methodist preacher who had long been causing trouble for TV and radio. He riled up his followers and instead of telling them to go to hell, CBS caved and cancelled the show six episodes into Season 2 in October 1988. He is also the reason why the Reagan-era FCC ruled that TV and radio aren't protected by the free speech provisions of the First Amendment. George Carlin did a bit about it in his 1988 HBO special.

That’s right! They WOULD say “now back to (show)” only to cut to the end credits! I can still feel the sense of anxiety and, almost betrayal, that would cause 3 year old me. 😂 I was still at an age where I believed TV (including cartoons) were real, that all of this was happening live in real time, and it always felt like the characters and network were just pulling the rug out from under me when the show would end. I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t stay longer when I wanted them to! Thankfully my amazing dad would get up at like seven thirty on Saturdays so he could tape muppet babies and peewee (and later Ernest, Garfield and rude dog and the dweebs) for me to watch any time. Saturday did indeed rock.

In my opinion Fox was the only one to get it pretty much right in the early to slightly mid 90's. Seriously, their bumpers were literally batman, Beetlejuice etc. Telling you what was coming up... not some monotone news anchor saying "Tonight Tony and Angela stub their toes on Who's the Boss!" I mean come on! What kid watching cartoons at 7:24am is gonna give a CRAP about "Who's the Boss" or "Guiding Light" and so on. Just as the networks gave in to years of lobbying from parental groups and put an end to all violence on Saturday morning programs, syndicated cartoons came along offering up violence galore. This marked the beginning of the end for the golden age of Saturday morning programming. 'The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', 'GI Joe', 'Jem', 'Thundercats', 'Strawberry Shortcake' and other cartoons started flooding local weekday afternoon schedules. Almost every popular kid show in 1988 had product tie-ins. Typically, the product came first and then the cartoon series was offered to TV stations at a loss - because the programs were just one long commercial! Parental groups became even more distressed by this new trend. By the end of the 1988 season, NBC talked openly about replacing Saturday morning cartoons with the 'Today Show' because they couldn't compete with violent cartoons airing on independent stations and cable. NBC finally did give up in 2001, selling their Saturday mornings to The Discovery Channel. By then, CBS had given over its Saturday morning programming to Nick, Jr.
@Samination2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a trend. Reagan relaxed restrictions allowing cartoon makers to advertise directly to children. Appalling I know. This was later corrected by Clinton. Parent groups controlled cartoons not because the network "gave in" but because they broadcast on public airwaves. Parent groups couldn't touch cable. And THAT is why the networks gave up.
