1968 was the most culturally tumultuous year of the 20th century, but you could never tell by these commercials.
@muzikdude11886 жыл бұрын
It was intentional. The public wanted TV programming to be an escape from all of the turbulence of the times that they were being inundated with regularly on the news, and the networks obliged with fun, light-hearted shows that rarely if ever made any mention of Vietnam, civil rights, or any of the other news items of that period.

Only tumultuous for those who delve in negativity, every year has those dysfunctional types, especially now. No the 60s was a smoother different time than today. Much more family values, maybe not as much as the 50s, but definitely was a wonderful time.

Wow, I had just turned one in November. What an interesting example of how much slower the world used to be. Most of the ads are a full 60 seconds long, and most have no accompanying/background music to speak of. They basically consist of a narrator or person just talking to the viewer in an unhurried manner. You could never do that today. Obviously the coming of the remote control, and the huge increase in the number of channels has made commercials much faster and more active in their presentation. I think that's Mae West in the Muriel Cigars ad.
@ernestcruz6316 Жыл бұрын

Man, it's too bad that the one bonafide awesome classic commercial in this bunch is for a cancer stick, aka Muriel Cigars! That woman was a #1 boss bitch from the word "go" and the whole commercial was acted and directed just perfectly. I would love to see a remake of that commercial done these days except for a change in what it advertised, and putting in whomever we've got around who could be this fabulous of a diva -- maybe Adele? I'm glad. BTW, that just a decade later commercials acknowledged that women could be life insurance people too (just see a late '70s Allstate commercial, for one) and the car commercials weren't so cheesy. Oh, and the man waiting for his baby to be born belonged to my parents' generation (i.e. born in the early - mid 1940s), but I didn't come along until 1979, at which point I'm pretty sure men were in the delivery room along with their wives and pipe tobacco smoking wasn't allowed inside the hospital.

He originally co-starred on "BEN CASEY" (1961-'66), and is best known to most people today as "Dr. Coleman" in the last original "STAR TREK" episode {which was filmed around this time, and telecast in June 1969}, "Turnabout Intruder". Harry also became famous for these "Taster's Choice" ads from the late '60s through the early '70s.
