I was lucky enough to have met an elderly woman in Vancouver BC who was given a visa by Mr Sugihara. Her passport was on display at the Jewish Holocaust museum in Vancouver BC. She was so lovely and kind and so full of life. I was so honoured to have met her.

Now this is what a true hero is! What he did not only changed lives at the time but will continue to make an impact forever. I had never heard of this wonderful man but I am so glad I have now. He is someone we should have learned about in school. Why only teach about Hitler and his horrific actions? This story is amazing. I had no idea about it and I’ve liked learning about WW2 history my entire life. It really makes you think about how many more courageous stories there are that may never be told but the positive side is, it happened and there are many more people on earth today thanks to those heroes who stepped up when they were needed most.

This is what Chiune Sugihara had to say about his actions that saved those families. "You want to know about my motivation, don't you? Well. It is the kind of sentiments anyone would have when he actually sees refugees face to face, begging with tears in their eyes. He just cannot help but sympathize with them. Among the refugees were the elderly and women. They were so desperate that they went so far as to kiss my shoes. Yes, I actually witnessed such scenes with my own eyes. Also, I felt at that time, that the Japanese government did not have any uniform opinion in Tokyo. Some Japanese military leaders were just scared because of the pressure from the Nazis; while other officials in the Home Ministry were simply ambivalent. People in Tokyo were not united. I felt it silly to deal with them. So, I made up my mind not to wait for their reply. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But, I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many people's lives... The spirit of humanity, philanthropy... neighborly friendship... with this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situation--and because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage."

The Japanese family is probably still paying the price generations later. If this guy kept his government job, the family would have been well off, for generations. He went penniless, because of his good deeds, and left nothing financially for his kids and grand kids.
