@sugabud Жыл бұрын
I still remember the first time I noticeably experienced (a pretty tame level of) racism and it totally changed my whole outlook on life. I was a pretty sheltered 16 year old and more naive than most at that age tbh. But that was one of those pinpoint moments in my life where I felt I really grew up after that. It wasn’t even that deep. I’d gone to a town where not a lot of POC were and we went shopping and I noticed that a lot of people were staring at me and my family. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why, I didn’t even notice it was all white people looking at me because I genuinely just don’t see race when I look at someone. But then my brother told us they were looking at us because we weren’t white. And it just made so much sense and it was suddenly so obvious to me. It left me feeling so stupid and naive afterwards, like I’ve obviously always known I was a minority but fortunately, I’d never felt I was different for it until then. It really hit me deep, right in the core - I’d never felt like that before. And that was just from being stared at. It wasn’t like they called us a slur or even said anything to us. But it totally changed my view on any weird interaction from there on afterwards, this little paranoid voice in the back of mind was conscious of the fact that this attribute could very easily be a reason why someone is being unnecessarily weird with me. I absolutely hate it but what I hate more is the fact that there can be genuine substance behind it. That the voice could very well be true. All for something as simple as the colour of my skin. It’s messed up.

@fernthegreenfairy how does believing that racism exists...make you a brainwashed racist? I'm so confused. Also I'm with the people asking for a source. Of course if the news lied I would want to know but that mother's upset seems real and the girl never once said "oh but I got a better award and got pictures coz I won!" It just wouldn't make much sense with how the mother and daughter were talking about the events. I am open to being proven wrong, but I need proof. If you can show us where the pictures are with the better award then I'll bite my tongue and admit I'm wrong, but until then you can't just spew your own version of events with no proof. It makes you seem like the racist who is desperately trying to reframe the narrative. But again I could be wrong. I'm just saying the way you're going about it makes you seems like an illegitimate source of info and this is the internet, anyone can claim anything, now a days you need proof. If you're genuinely wanting to make a compelling argument you're going to need to show proof.

This was a case of antiwhitism, because the White woman is assumed to be racist, when in reality, the opposite is true. This White woman was also the judge who scored the Black girl so highly that she was given a white-ribbon medal later in the ceremony. Most of the girls did not get a white-ribbon medal, because those medals are only for the winners. The red-ribbon medals are participation medals. Please see this article: "Endless rage: the gymnastics racism scandal that wasn't".

Because racism doesn't make sense . To hate someone for something they are born with and they have no control of , such as the colour of their skin cannot make sense to a 'normal' person and to do this to a child as well is not just senseless but disgusting . In the end the child won out anyway , with her own personal message from the best female gymnast in the world and she's Black , after that why would she care about a medal from a racist nobody .

Deplorable, utterly unacceptable and inexcusable. Gymnastics Ireland needs to make public the repercussions for the official/s responsible. To thebeautiful talented young athlete and her Mum I say well done! You demonstrated the highest standards of maturity and the best sporting discipline inhow you both responded to this affront. You are a sterling example to Gymnastics Ireland of what excellent civilised behaviour looks like!

Even the children next to her noticed something was wrong and were looking around. Shame on this woman. She knew exactly how many medals she was supposed to hand out and she should have turned around and begun searching the moment she realized she was still holding one.

@@epic7224 brother, I assure you that people all around the world are racist, Individuals are racist, not entire ethnic groups. Ive always seen it as nothing more than people trying to remain in touch with their cultural identity in such an individualistic society. with that being said, Its things like this that gives many in the irish diaspora a bad reputation. Saying "im of Irish heritage" while exclaiming "I didn't know the Irish were racist" in the same sentence makes you appear completely oblivious to the own identity you claim.
