Without support from Trump, Romney couldn't even be elected for senator in Utah. Instead of appreciation, Romney started his senator job by objecting almost all Trump's plans. Then he voted for impeachment of Trump. Now he called Trump "phony", simply because he knew he would have no chance for re-elecation.

I was no fan of Romney and volunteered many many hours to re-elect Obama. But I think your characterization is way off. I was thinking to myself during this interview how refreshing his humility was. I dunno if that is what he genuinely believes, but it is what he genuinely wants to project. Even during his criticism of Obama, he said of Obama not listening to his opinions, "maybe he was wise not to". Comments like that would never be uttered by all these politicians with no self awareness, humility, and confidence to be wrong.

Mitt's platitudinous, lose with dignity style led directly to Trump. He is the weak dad that caused the kids to go wild. Republicans finally realized that guys like him had neither the ability nor the intention of representing conservative beliefs, and started looking elsewhere. Who they found was Trump. If people like Mitt Romney had grown a pair when they had the chance and properly stood up for their voters, maybe we'd have a more palatable political landscape right now. Trump is simply a Republican who refused to let the Democrats run roughshod over him. Nothing more, nothing less.
