Swiss Guards carry on 500-year tradition of swearing to protect the pope

On Sunday, the latest group of Swiss Guards were sworn in, taking an oath to protect the pope. The group is also known for their unique uniforms, which got a modern update. CBS News foreign correspondent Seth Doane explains.

Also, it takes like 10 years until you get the chance of receiving citicenship in switzerland if you are lucky. With other words, its impossible to be in the swiss guard if you arent swiss. And thats GOOD. Its called SWISS guard for a reason and it has a deep history. Its not called "hey i wanna join the club from wherever".

Because in the medieval ages, the swiss mercenaries were seen as the best and most ferarless soldiers at the time. Well as long as they got payed. There was a saying at the time "no money no swiss".It was sadly not uncommon that brothers from the same village fought against each other in different armies. Also a reason why swiss mercenaries were so successfull was, because they didnt play by the rules of the Knights (play unfair)

They always carry modern pistols even when they stand there with a halberd. So if needed, they can fire back pretty quickly. Additionally, in their armory they store modern rifles so in case of a major threat they can arm themselves more properly. But a pistol is a baseline. In case of more physical attack, the halberd can also be used.
