Corrections officer's decision to care for an inmate's baby costs her a job

The fact that she got fired loudly speaks about the system not being correctional at all. You can't correct without intent, without good participants, good will, and respect for human life. It's sad to know that the baby is now in foster care but that the mom is working in getting herself together is a great development. Hopefully they will be together for good and for the better.

As a retired parole officer I commend this woman for seeing a human first and a state cash cow NEVER! I’ve watched people change their lives and I left that job because the state HATED success stories. Bless this woman! Bless that child! Not only have I supervised ALL levels of felony offenders in TN AND did interstate compact…I’ve supervised sex offenders, worked in wilderness boot camps for juveniles AND counseled teens in states custody due to trauma and addiction issues. The absolute worst thing for a kid in strife? State programs and foster care. We monetized simple care of our children and the wolves usually fleece those sheep. I’d MuCH rather a child go to someone who desires to help it out of pure goodness than a financial motive. I’ve lived in this world and worked in it my entire life and realized every program created to benefit these kids and adults is also used as a financial motive to keep the cycle going. Let’s do kind things for others without money being the motive. That’s when God shows up.

They carry this trauma well into adulthood, you're literally advocating for more criminals to be made by advocating them to be ripped from their mothers arms.

My late mom & dad used to say that when a door closes, another opens, and if that other door closes, a open skylight will appear. It is a shame there aren’t random acts of kindness emanating from the halls of Congress, like the kindness of Ms. Bell. Instead, there is hate, shaming, lying, bullying, etc… The GQP could learn a great deal from this woman. Dad was a retired combat veteran of two wars. He passed several years ago. Mom was also a veteran. I lost her more than twenty years ago. They were both Marine Corp veterans. I love them with every fiber of my being.

I'm so sorry this wonderful human lost her job & that the baby isn't with her. She deserves an award. Years later, I visited and asked a corrections officer, whom I now consider my aunt, about how my sister became part of her family. It turns out that my mom was pregnant and in prison. She saw how respected Jamilla was and how well she cared for women in the prison. My mom asked Jamilla to take the baby, and though it was a heavy decision, Jamilla prayed to Allah and received a message to welcome the baby into her family. Jamilla and her cousin Atiya worked together to care for the baby after my mom gave birth. Atiya, who was emotionally distressed when the baby was at Jamilla's, eventually requested to adopt my sister, and the courts approved it. Jamilla and Atiya are incredibly kind people who have embraced all of my mom's children, including me, and I'm very grateful for them.

Man, my daughter’s daycare director used to be a corrections officer. A lot of these people actually have very big hearts. It’s silly to say it’s a “conflict of interest”. It’s a matter of taking care of a child. She could do it. Why not? She’s not a judge or anything or directly involved in the case. She seems to have taken it well, though. I hope whatever was going on in the mother has changed and this woman was able to show her how kind people really could be.
