This hits a little different after Inside. This is a genius take on it.
@clockworkcrew80123 жыл бұрын
He would probably not agree with this take now. That was one of the main points of Inside, and actually him only making jokes about white people is following critical race theory. Rac-ism is a system defined by race, in favor of one race over another. The racists would then be the people who benefit from the system favoring their race, and they defend the system because it works for them, creating some racist justification like black people are criminals. You cannot be racist against racists though, as the system benefits them. You can't be racist towards white people as white people will still benefit by being shot by cops less, possessing generational wealth, and being trusted more, no matter what one person says about them.. If you are racist to black people you are perpetuating the the system of racism that already exists, you are buying into the system that wants you to believe that, spreading the lie to others, then making you a racist. Some songs as evidence: white woman Instagram, comedy, thats how the world works, and welcome to the internet. And Just so everyone knows, yes, the typical use of racism how you know, discrimination on race, is a thing, but when we are talking about society, culture, and nations, this is the accepted and widely practiced academic theory. We don't live in an equal system, we still live in a racist one, where racism disproportionately affects some more than others, and we must acknowledge that so we can fix the issue, demolishing any racial structure we find. Then with no race structure, where there is full equality, no one could be racist, then you could joke about whatever you want. But until then, jokes that would support the racial-class structure of our society, are racist.

Burnham pretty much hits the nail on the head here and BIll Burr has similar view where the people that feel offended are such a small minority that who cares what they say? As Burr puts it, it's like 1 blog and some tweets, why not just ignore that vocal minority for like a week and it just disappears w/ no consequence. Burnham's point about the pendulum swinging in the right direction is also a very good point. While SJW and political correctness has gone too far, right now it still better than decades ago when racism and misogyny were accepted. We just have to hope the political correctness doesnt get too out of hand that it infringes on free speech like Burnham says.
@jaykaykaykay44168 жыл бұрын
Small minority =/= small influence. "offense takers" aren´t the silent majority but they have a more influence than blogs and tweets, people are losing their jobs, policy and law is catering to them, politicians are using their talking points etc. If it were possible to just ignore, like one mostly does one would, but it´s not possible because they have too much power. "We just have to hope the political correctness doesn´t get too out of hand that it infringes on free speech" Where have you been for the last few years?

Alessandro Scuderi We've always had "Political Correctness" (Hate that word). People pretend as if its brand new thing. Like Bo saids, the thought behind PC is not bad. The problem with now is everything going viral. We make PC too much of a problem, and THATS why it becomes a problem. Ghostbusters blew up because it went viral. They marketed towards the fact that so many people are PC and to the people that hate it. The fact that we HATE anything PC is part of the problem as well. Ironically enough, you have people offended because people get offended. Its all media bullshit.

@@blobber51 The problem with that, which I think Bo stated really well, is that by being anti political correctness we risk reverting to a time where it was common and okay to have racist, sexist, and homophobic points of view. While over policing of speech is a problem, it's better than the alternative which devalues years of progress. Political correctness also isn't a new thing. It's always been relevant in younger generations. It's the reason we no longer use the f slur and the reason we no longer call black people negros. The civil rights movement, women's suffrage movement, and gay rights movement were all filled with people of the now older generations whose views were seen by their elders in a similar way to how our views are seen now. Society evolves with time and political correctness is part of that. Plus, if a word makes someone around you uncomfortable and it costs you nothing to not say it then the only reason you could have to say it is to be rude or for satire to make fun of people who say it seriously... Media companies have pretty much always been privately owned. If you’re concerned about them controlling free speech, then your problem is with the free market. They’ve always been controlling the news, and they do so to make money. The only difference is that other info that they don’t cover can now go viral and contrast with their typical narratives. They aren’t getting more manipulative, everyone else is just getting louder, so we’re realizing the picture is a lot bigger. @@mnm1273 alright, since you want to argue, the laws are very clearly heavily influenced by cancel culture. People get fined for making jokes that could possibly offend protected groups, which is basically the legal form of cancel culture.

Such an important distinction to make between the unrestrained power of the internet and groups trying to figure out how to navigate the best way to treat other people and sensitive issues. A lot of people do conflate the two and I've never seen someone articulate that distinction exactly. Like "cancel culture" where people on Twitter will try to run you out of a job for whatever reason is not the same as the movement to be more pc or to be sensitive about issues and minority groups' struggles

For real. Or they act like they somehow “discovered” it or like this was new. Like the man didn’t leave it up on his own page as a way to hold himself accountable. If you’ve been a fan of Bo’s for even just a little bit we all already knew because it’s been on his page and he apologized in many interviews. He wrote it when he was 16, it was obviously satire mocking racists, and he’s also apologized for it MANY many times over the years. People are rediculous.

I think that this is the older generation of Hollywood (everyone who’s careers peeked and who are not standing out currently) are coming to the realization that although they are getting a pushback for potentially hurtful and insensitive jokes and styles of entertainment, they are also realizing that at least this pushback is coming from a side standing for equality rather than a side of fascism and ignorance... they are also realizing that the currier institutions in society that these comedians brought to light and are continuing to do so, are now taken seriously by the masses. It’s a beautiful thing and speaks to the amount of influence specifically comedy and music have on the population

@@RichWilco I dont really agree with that. I know people have gotten pissy over his comedy before, you can find videos of him being heckled during his shows in the past. I think too many people are being pissy cry babies cause they dont get to say whatever without any repercussions. Obviously not every case is the same, some people do over react but you cant pretend that every instance of outrage is unwarranted. Shrug it off and move forward or quit because comedy isnt for you if you cant handle crossing a line sometimes and getting back lash for it.

Basically what Bo Burnham is saying is to allow both comedians and audience to think and interpret. And of course the dangers of the internet being "unrestrained". Before either side hides in the veil of being "not enough PC" or "being too pc", the artist/comedian should be allowed the opportunity to tell a punchline and the audience should be allowed to interpret the joke. If it connects, then good job, if it didn't maybe it will after sometime. Now saying something offensive by the comedian would just be rude and lazy. The artists should try and maybe even the audience too and just keep comedy for the laughs.

If you are a comedian, whose job it is to make people laugh, and instead of laughing, they think you're a terrible person and never want to listen to your jokes again, the audience isn't "too sensitive," you're just bad at your job
@thesoupin8or6733 жыл бұрын
@Vladimir Peter then either it's worth it to you to continue performing for the 1000 that do, or you perhaps consider adjusting your material. Bonus points if you do some introspection and consider who those 1000 that do are and why other people don't. If you realize one day you've been catering to a bunch of racists for example, and you decide maybe that's not the brand identity you're trying to cultivate, you can adjust your material even if it's 50/50. However, you don't have to change a thing if you're happy with the size of your audience; lots of comedians are loved for saying controversial things. However, that doesn't mean you get to complain in the next breath about how your audiences are too small or "can't laugh at anything anymore." Once you're doing that, you're revealing that you're bad at catering to the desires of your audiences, which is your entire job as a comedian

I consider myself to be socially liberal. You should be able to express yourself and as long as you're not hurting yourself or others, go for it. HOWEVER, when it comes to certain things, there will be people that aren't comfortable around you as a personality and that's just life. Not everyone is going to be your friend. Infact, there are going to be people that genuinely dislike you and that's fine. At the end of the day, who cares? If it's a bunch of people screaming on the internet, who cares? 9 times out of 10, they're all bark and no bite. The second they get the SLIGHTEST push back irl, it's all, "well... I don't know... I just feel like...." And all that hostility that happened on the internet is gone. People just take the internet WAY too seriously
