One was to get proof that Ellsberg's was gay and he ordered break-in to his psychiatrist to find said proof (when the judge learned of this, criminal trail against Ellsberg leak of confidential history was dismissed), and another into the Brookings Institute and this was also recorded. Many of Nixon's top men knew of the break in including his former AG who was also head of re-election and his former law partner. You can't get much closer to the boss than that. Nixon also tried to get the CIA to lie to the FBI about the break-in. (I would be willing to read Russ Baker's book and suspect it will have interesting history and context.)
