It’s not that we don’t prioritize it, it’s that the money just isn’t there. If your rent is more than you get paid, then that’s that. There is nothing to save when you are underwater and your basic necessity living expenses (rent and utilities) are higher than your income which is the case for a lot of us. Jobs do not pay an appropriate amount for what housing costs nowadays in any area.

But also some people are renting in places they can’t afford in the first place
@keilana6
@keilana6 5 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Landlords are raising rent at an unsustainable rate for working person. One emergency can mean loss of home or transportation cascading into loss of income. People who use income for survival usually do not get raises large enough to meet ever increasing cost of living.

I cannot afford to buy a used car. When I 1st was unable to repair car, I thought I could save money used for car expenses. Turns out I have been spending that money on food & increased electricity costs. Electric charges have doubled for me in last 3 months. I am not eligible for any assistance & I am low income. These guys are talking about saving if your income is over $ 30,000.

They use the U-3 unemployment number which doesn't include people who stopped looking and more. The U-6 is more accurate and is at least double the U-3 number.
@theoriginalr7310

Yes, but the U-6 number is lower than it has ever been the last couple of years. No matter how you cut it, unemployment is very low.

15% of my pay check each month goes into my 401K, but its seriously squeezing me, on top of the HSA and then all that tax thats coming every two weeks. Tack on rent and groceries, you barely have anything left. And you gotta save for old age knowing how expensive this country is becoming every month.

I also guarantee that if you look at the spending history/budgets of most of these people that are essentially living paycheck to paycheck, you can easily identify reasonable cuts that could be made to save more money for the vast majority of them.

Dude sounds so privileged its not cute! You do need to save ...Here's a thought, how many people in the last year have had their cars hit in their own driveway and nobody there to see it so they're forced to pay for it themselves? How many people have had their rent increase more than $400 a month? last time I checked those are emergencies so when you use that fund that took years to save up on back-to-back emergencies that's out of your control; then guess what, it's a lot harder to build that emergency when your income didn't go up and you're depleted!! Stop acting like Americans are lazy cause We are NOT.🖤

Wages are outpacing inflation at this point. I don't think he's claiming people are lazy but we are a consumer-driven society with very little budget consciousness. I also don't make a lot of money and all of my expenses are much higher. But I just tighten my belt. Never order out for food. Never buy a coffee on the road. Never go on vacation. Drive a 17 year old car. Wear thrift store clothes. Never get my nails done. Use a 10- year old phone. And yes, I have an emergency fund.

Money is a behavior problem and not a math problem. We can control the controllables of spending less than we make. What you said about spending on vacations or wants is why it’s easy not to pay ourselves first. Dave Ramsey’s financial peace is a structured process of baby steps one can do (no matter what income) to change our consumerism and save money.
