I’ve been mulching the leaves with the mower into the lawn for 3 years now. Saves so much time instead bagging

In 1980, I roto-tilled my yard and planted my lawn from seed. Every year after that, I let a large maple tree next door blanket my lawn every winter. I never use fertilizer or sprays or weed killer and my lawn looks as spectacular as my neighbor who spends endless amounts of time dethatching and fertilizing and watering and mowing, etc. To each their own!

In middle school we went on a week long field trip camping in palomar mountain CA, we saw a natural fallen tree, a tree decomposing that fell naturally, and another decomposed fallen tree with good size saplings already growing from the compost. Nature is cool.

The old Timers told me they would rake leaves, because large piles would attrack mice and other rodents.

Also leave grass clipping on the lawn to be returned to the soil, then you do not need to add chemical fertilizer!

I’ve done this for years and I live in a townhouse complex. The gardeners come in and blow the entire complex weekly. I told them to leave my park area alone as I use the leaves in these huge beds that border my unit. They can do the parking area . The leaves feed the soil and ground under trees. As long as the leaves break down. The problem comes though when you’ve got large dense layers that have sat under trees. Since we have wildfires in California this cannot be left. I think local garbage company composts these and sales it.

We've been mulching leaves for over 22 years and it made the lawn in our first house look more robust . I f you know how to mulch, your yard won't look untidy and your back will thank you.

People don't like the idea for the same reason that many (not all) people dress up to go to church on Sundays - to compete with their neighbors. A lawn that doesn't look like it is from a TV commercial makes these insecure people frightened.

Thirty-five years ago we moved in to our our. For the first two years I raked the lawn. And guess what? They just grew back the next year. Ever since I have mowed them over. Works great.

Pennsylvania. We dont have to rake. The stiff fall and winter wind blows them everywhere. The cats scatter them hunting for field mice. We mow them in spring and the pieces disappear in a coupla weeks. Nature. ❤

I have a lawn service guy with one of those huge radius large blade riding mowers go over my lawn one time around Nov 15th after all the leaves have fallen. I have two huge trees and lots of leaves and within 20 minutes they’re mulched and disappear. For $50 rather then four or five hours of hard labor.

Natural mulch has so many benefits for animals; birds; trees and is great ground cover

Depends on your immediate environment. If your property is near the street, most of them eventually blow into the street, clog the drains, and cause bigger problems.

In the old days where I lived they would rake them in piles to the gutter then light them the smell of them smouldering would permeate the neighbourhood

I’ve always wondered why Americans clean up the leaves and then pay for fertiliser to put back lol
@BradThePitts3 күн бұрын
It's because tens of millions of U.S. households are in suburban areas where the trees are near the street's drainage system. The leaves clog the drains and cause bigger problems. People in more rural areas don't rake their leaves.

People should stop with pesticides and weed killer too. If it kills, it can't be good for the environment, or you! If I see dandelions on someone's yard, that earns them some respect in my mind...

Stop the excuses for your laziness. Keep your place neat and in good order, be a good neighbour so the leaves don’t end up in someone else’s yard.
@APrawks2 күн бұрын
Are leaves good for your lawn? Absolutely! If I put a blanket on your lawn preventing it from getting sunlight and water, would that be good for it? Absolutely not! If you're going to fertilize with leaves then mulch first and spread them about. Also, maybe your neighbor doesn't appreciate your leaves in their yard. Go to your local compost and bring home the good stuff if you want to fertilize naturally. Spread that compost like top soil and let it break down into your soil.
